What to do With 24 Hours in Puerto de la Cruz

Tenerife has been a popular tourist hotspot for decades and, if I’m honest, I used to think that it wouldn’t rank too highly on my travel bucket list. But as one of the longest-standing holiday destinations in the Canary Islands, there is something about this place that keeps attracting new travellers to its beautiful shores. As well as the usual clubbing scene and party atmosphere, there is plenty more to be discovered if you’re willing to venture beyond the resort-lined beaches.

Discover Puerto de la Cruz

One of my favourite forgotten parts of Tenerife is the laid-back town of Puerto de la Cruz. It claims the name as the oldest resort on the island, but this charming place has an identity completely its own. Compared to the other parts of Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz offers a much more relaxed atmosphere, attracting more mature and cosmopolitan visitors. With stunning scenery and a balmy climate, this port town makes for a great day trip to start your holiday off. It’s also a popular stopover for those travelling on a cruise.

If you’re able to squeeze it into your itinerary, here are a few things not to miss during your visit.

The Botanic Gardens

Discover a wonderful taste of the glorious flora and fauna that the island has to offer, and enjoy a change of scenery from the beach with a visit to these beautiful gardens. There’s no better way to start the day than with a calming walk amongst the greenery. Bliss.

The Orchid Garden

This real-life Garden of Eden dates back to the eighteenth-century, and it has passed through the hands of several wealthy local families over the years. The garden itself offers a cool respite from the Mediterranean sun, as well as a delightful feast for all the senses. It’s attracted many famous visitors too, such as the renowned botanical painter Marianne North, and Sir Richard Francis Burton – it’s not hard to see why!

Black Sand Beaches

Catch some sun on the impressive and unusual black sand beaches, of which there are two main ones here. If you’re pressed for time, I’d recommend visiting Playa Jardin, in particular, as it has the best swimming conditions and plenty of beachside amenities.

Lago Martianez

If you’re visiting Puerto de la Cruz on a cruise stopover, this is the best place to go, as you can easily spend the whole day here. This lovely, much-loved leisure complex includes a lake, plenty of bars and restaurants, gardens, swimming pools and shady terraces – there’s even an interesting sculpture park to explore. It’s a fun and relaxing place to hang out alone or with the family.

Where to Stay:

Hotel Best Semiramis – This is a stylish hotel with an incredible cliff-side location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Every room is air-conditioned and well-appointed, and guests can enjoy two swimming pools, lovely gardens and a full onsite spa.

Hotel Botanico y Oriental Spa Garden – Set in beautiful gardens and offering three outdoor pools, this luxury accommodation is the epitome of relaxation. Guests also have full access to the spa facilities, so you can be as busy or as laidback as you like.

AluaSoul Orotava Valley – This charming hotel is just a stone’s throw away from beautiful Playa Jardin Beach. WiFi is available throughout the complex and suites are complete with private balconies and separate lounges.

How to Get There

You’ll find several airlines offering frequent flights to Tenerife throughout the year, including Easyjet, Ryanair, Qatar Airlines, and others. Prices vary, depending on the season, but you can find great deals throughout June, in particular. Tickets then increase in price during the later summer months, but at £165 return, it’s still reasonable.

To make sure that your holiday is as effortless as possible, I highly recommend pre-booking a Tenerife airport transfer. A Tenerife transfer is a simple way to start your holiday on the best terms, as all the stress of getting to your first destination will be taken care of. The airport transfer will take less than 30 minutes but with an experienced driver, it will feel even quicker. (If you’re on a cruise, you can also book a transfer from the port.)

Types of Transfer

Shuttle Direct offers a reliable airport transfer service to Puerto de la Cruz, with plenty of options depending on your needs and budget. Here is a brief overview of what you have to choose from.

Taxi:

A pre-booked airport taxi, Tenerife to Puerto de la Cruz, is infinitely better than waiting in line for a public taxi. It’s a little more expensive than a shared bus, but offers extra comfort and ease.

Shuttle Bus:

That’s not to say the shared options aren’t great, though! A shuttle bus transfer from Tenerife Airport to Puerto de la Cruz is a nice budget option if you’re watching the pennies.

Private Transfer:

For travellers who prefer complete privacy and convenience, booking a private transfer is the way to go. Tenerife airport to Puerto de la Cruz is only a short drive, but if you’re happy to splash out a little, this is a fabulous way to travel.

Minibus Transfer:

One of my favourite shuttle options is the minibus. You’ll be sharing with some other travellers but the Tenerife transfer won’t feel crowded so it’s still a quick and comfortable journey. It’s also a good option if you’re travelling with a large group of family or friends – so you can all travel together.

Choosing the Right Transfer

With such great options, choosing the right airport transfer for you can be tricky. I always suggest starting with your budget and then deciding on your essential needs. This will help you figure out whether you need to spend a little more for comfort, or if you’re happy to share a trip. If you have any other questions, contact Shuttle Direct. Their team is helpful and knowledgeable so they will be best placed to help you decide.

Cost: This is a key deciding factor for some people, as playing for an airport transfer is an extra cost. But in many instances, I personally feel that it’s worth it.

Convenience: If you have lots of luggage or large bags, a private car might be better, as you’ll have all the room you need. Alternatively, if you like to meet new people while travelling, a shared service offers a great opportunity to meet like-minded people.
