Family Friendly Guide to Tossa de Mar
What To See
Vila Vella, the old town of Tossa de Mar, is a wonderful introduction to the history of the place. In complete contrast to what you now see along the seafront, the old town is entirely surrounded by a city wall, complete with 7 watchtowers. The views from here are stunning, both towards the beautiful white sandy beaches and the mountains of the Selvathe Cadiretes. Get the kids to explore and they will discover all kinds of interesting historical facts about this Catalan town.

Els Ametllers Roman Villa
Another historical gem, this Roman villa dates back over 2000 years. A hugely important monument, it offers an insight into how the Romans farmed and cultivated wine in the Mediterranean region at the time when they dominated the area. Although visiting ruins might not be high on the agenda of your kids, persuade them to visit this one and they will soon change their minds!
Beach Bliss
There are three main beaches in Tossa de Mar, all ideal for catching the rays and enjoying some down time with a book. The main one, Platja Gran, despite being the busiest, is still ranked among the best beaches in the world. Sheltered, calm and excellent for swimming, it is easy to spend a day here. Kids will love this one, as there is plenty of ‘people watching’ to do.
La Mer Menuda is a favourite with families. Smaller than Platja Gran, it still has plenty of facilities so you don’t need to worry about packing for every eventuality when you want to spend a day here.
If you have kids who don’t mind a bit of peace and tranquillity, head to Platja d’es Codolar – a hidden gem surrounded by cliffs. The warm waters are sublime and, along with the soft silky sand, make this place a very special one.
What to Do
Shopping
Most teenagers love to shop and the Vila Nova (new town) is bursting with boutiques and designer label shops that teenagers will go mad for. From leather bags to jewellery and from perfumes to classy souvenirs, there is something for every shopaholic here. I would watch their spending though, as they could go overboard in this friendly and welcoming shopping mecca.
Diving
Tossasub Diving Centre is top of the list for anyone interested in trying scuba diving. I know plenty of teenagers who love the challenge of a new sport and, with the added bonus of being subjected to a whole new underwater world of delights, this is one that should be fully encouraged.
Paintball
Want some adrenaline fuelled family fun? A day of paintballing is an exhilarating option. Run by Can Garriga Paintball – the activity involves playing the game in a shaded pine and oak forest on one of 5 game fields. Safe, secure, and lots of fun, this is one that will tire out even the most energetic of kids!
Scuba Diving and Snorkelling
Sub Mares run an excellent diving school but they also offer snorkelling, which is a more relaxed alternative for anyone just wanting to bob about watching the fish and enjoy a peaceful introduction to life under the sea.

Speed Boat Rides
Probably one of the best activities on offer in Tossa de Mar for teenagers with a thirst for adventure is a speedboat ride. Catering for families with kids of all ages, the Splash Ocean Adventures Company have a high safety record. The one-hour trip now includes a chance to snorkel, with all equipment provided. They even take photos for you, so tell the kids to leave the iPhones at the hotel if they don’t want to risk dropping them in the water!
