If a holiday means getting the chance to let your inner adventurer free, then look no further than Lanzarote’s Playa Blanca. Although a popular destination for sun-seekers who like to laze by the pool, this Mediterranean island is perfect for active families who look like to make their time together as memorable as possible. With a volcanic landscape to explore, a vibrant local community and access to some of the best water sports on the island, the opportunities for adventure in Playa Blanca are endless.
See the Sights by Segway
Explore the island from a unique perspective. Segway tours are becoming more popular and it’s easy to see why. They’re easier to handle and safer than a bicycle, meaning that everyone can get involved – even Grandma! Zoom your way around the island on this environmentally-friendly technology, while your guide reveals the history and culture of the area.
Those that like to veer off the beaten track will enjoy the off-road nature of the tour, which treats tourists to spectacular scenery of the Papagayo beaches, as well as complete immersion in the volcanic terrain.
Dive Deep to Discover
For the next once-in-a-lifetime experience, families will have to dive beneath the waves of the sparkling sea. Museo Atlantico Lanzarote is the only underwater museum in Europe making it a truly unforgettable experience. The underwater world of sculptures was designed by world-renowned artist Jason deCaires Taylor, and consists of ten groups.
As you descend into the watery world, you’ll see strange structures including the famous Raft of Lampedusa, which is a reference to the current refugee crisis, and hybrid sculptures highlighting the merging of nature and humanity. Even those who aren’t particularly interested in art will find it hard not to be blown away by the spectacle on show.
Dives are offered almost every day. If you’re yet to get your diving licence, snorkelling is always available and it still offers an interesting view of the museum from above. You can also choose to enrol in the dive program offered by the Mueso Atlantico which includes an incredible private tour of the museum.
Wet and Wild Family Fun
Above the surface, the fun continues in the form of a variety of water sports. Whether you’re an experienced thrill seeker or looking to push yourself out of your comfort zone, Playa Blanca is full of water-based activities for adrenaline junkies of all levels.
Here are a few of the best ways to get your heart pumping.
- Jet Ski — For those with the need for speed, hiring a jet ski is the best way to get your kicks. Feel the freedom of zooming along the water and challenge the family to a race.
- Banana Boat — A family favourite. The banana boat is a thrilling and hilarious boat ride that tests your strength as to try not to be thrown off with twists and turns.
- Flyboard — Experience the incredible sensation of flying with this water jetpack technology. Your heart will be racing as you soar into the air and then dive into the water like dolphin… huge fun to be had!
- Parascending — Take to the skies and feel the wind rush beneath your feet as you glide above the ocean and enjoy the views. The bold might want to try a flight height of 400 metres!
Mingle with the Locals at Marina Rubicon Market
After all those activities, a slow morning of local retail therapy is a nice way to spend one of the last days of your jam-packed holiday. Marina Rubicon Market has grown considerably over the years and is the bustling hub where tourists and locals meet.
If you’re looking for gifts or mementos, this market is fantastic as it offers an eclectic mixture of souvenirs and local crafts, especially jewellery. Interspersed amongst the stalls are cafes and bars offering taste of limoncello and wine – definitely a must for Mum and Dad. This colourful and vibrant attraction is a lovely way to spend a few hours.
Marina Rubicon Market is held every Wednesday and Saturday between 9am and 2pm.

Flights from the UK to Lanzarote Airport are frequent, so finding a time to suit you is easy. Prices are pretty consistent throughout the year, except in May when they soar. I’d recommend booking a transfer from the airport with Shuttle Direct, as they will get you to Playa Blanca in around 30 minutes.
