Crete is known for its stunning shoreline and beautiful clean beaches, but one of the absolute best is located in western Crete, in a village called Agia Marina. Just 9km from the bustling city of Chania, this village is a perfect location for those looking for a relaxing beach holiday with some nearby attractions for potential day trips.
Read on to find out what you can enjoy in Crete’s most picturesque seaside village.
Top Tip: Take a look at this blog post about the stylish resort of Hersonissos if you’re looking for a different part of Greece to explore.
The Beach, Of Course
You could not visit Agia Marina without setting foot on the sand – it is simply too beautiful to miss. The beach is long and sandy; just perfect for an evening or a morning stroll. Along the shore are all the facilities you could need, including bars and restaurants. The sea is perfectly clear in most parts, and warm enough for paddling!
Opposite the beach is the Island of Thodorou which, although small, enjoys a rich history and ancient legends. There are some old remains of forts as well as the Church of Saint Theodore still left on the island, though unfortunately most of the structure has been destroyed. Thodorou has suffered intense battles of ownership in the past, but finally became part of Crete during the Second World War.
Folklore Museum
For a cultural diversion, you can visit Agia Marina’s Folklore Museum. In this traditional rural house, you’ll experience the Cretan way of life and discover some authentic Greek skills such as weaving art and olive oil making. The house is a non-profit organisation and has accumulated some extraordinary objects over time that were originally owned by local families. This unique museum definitely makes for a fantastic cultural day out.
Almira Beach Bar & Restaurant
This is a fabulous place to enjoy some refreshments, during or after a day at the beach. The bar and restaurant offers a range of beverages including a large selection of beers, wines and cocktails. The beautifully prepared food dishes range from Mediterranean to European, and include fresh seafood and pasta (these meals can be brought to you on the beach while you’re lounging under an umbrella!). During the day a lighter beach menu is also available, serving delicious salads, burgers and sandwiches. Almira also provides some great entertainment in the form of live music events.
The gorgeous scenery that surrounds this area is truly magical; the décor is clean and modern, and there’s a wonderfully fresh, light feel to the restaurant due to the calm sea breeze. It really is the perfect place to enjoy an intimate meal with a breath-taking view.
