Soldeu: fusing Spanish culture with a great winter sports trip

Soldeu has so much to offer and many seek it out as the perfect place to go skiing or snowboarding as it combines so much of what they want in a winter sports resort, namely snow, fun and, despite the cold, plenty of sunshine. It is still Spain after all. So you can improve your technique during the day, before consuming paella, tapas and sangria in the evening.

It is still Spain after all. So you can improve your technique during the day, before consuming paella, tapas and sangria in the evening.

Furthermore, if Soldeu does not satisfy all your needs you have a second resort, El Tartar, just a few kilometres down the road to give you the feeling of two skiing holidays for the price of one.

Between the two locations they have 30 lifts taking you to 63 slopes, suitable for all levels of skier/snowboarder, from complete beginner to the most advanced, including several black runs.

Indeed, in El Tartar there is a larger freestyle park which is immensely popular, particularly for boarders who wish to show off their tricks, kicks and jumps. This is certainly the place to go if you are a true adrenaline junkie.

If you are a novice there are plenty of easier slopes and a variety of ski schools to choose from.

Bringing the World Cup to Soldeu

To further augment Soldeu’s reputation as a must visit for all winter sport enthusiasts, it hosted the World Cup alpines event in 2012 and also expects to be the location for further races later this year and next.

Soldeu is definitely the up and coming of European ski resorts.

Where to eat

Soldeu has various restaurants to choose from but Fat Albert’s is particularly popular due to its top class fish dishes, as well as tasty steaks and burgers.

If you are looking for some local cuisine the Borda del Rector offers plenty of Andorran dishes. It is located slightly closer to El Tartar than Soldeu.

One last option which also offers fine Spanish dining is La Llar de L’artesa – Borda Popaire. In addition to the great local food on offer, you can also admire the antique, cosy building whilst devouring the meat or fish dish you have chosen to satisfy your palate.

Going out

For the perfect Aprés ski option many head to the aforementioned Fat Albert’s but do not ignore the Aspen bar which is well known for its live music and is also a popular spot among sports viewing enthusiasts.

A great live band is the perfect way to round off a hard day’s skiing. Enjoy a beer or two in a traditional pub atmosphere whilst rocking the night away to your heart’s content.

Alternatives to skiing or snowboarding

Soldeu is also highly regarded due to having more than just skiing and snowboarding to do whilst in this idyllic town.

Snowmobiling and sledding are excellent options if you are looking for a break from the slopes.

Furthermore, there are many spars, pools and baths if you are looking to unwind and relax your weary muscles.

Low cost

The best low cost option is the Naudi hotel which is located in the heart of Soldeu.

However, do not be deceived by the price. Just because this is a budget option it still has all the basic necessities and so much more besides. It has its own restaurant, wifi and all rooms include a flat screen television.

The setting is perfect with plenty of natural landscape on view and lying just 200 metres from the nearest piste. In fact, if you decided to eat here you will get to enjoy the marvellous scenery right in front of your eyes while enjoying excellent local and international cuisine.

Mid Range

Apartements Els Llacs is a great four star option set in and amongst the mountains of Soldeu.

The mountain style décor adds to the allure of the place and it is little wonder that it is well liked by those looking for somewhere affordable, yet luxurious.

In fact, the apartments are befitting of a more expensive hotel with either a terrace or a balcony, both of which offer excellent views of the jaw-dropping panorama. Each flat is all kitted out with fully equipped kitchens, flat screen televisions and wifi. But the real touch of style comes in the little extra touches, such as hydro-massage baths, parquet floors and electric blinds.

Luxury

The Sport Hotel Hermitage and Spa is the ideal place to choose if you are looking for somewhere luxurious to stay and is a five-star hotel in every way.

It describes itself as the ‘new concept in luxury’ on its website largely due to the fact it is 1850 metres above sea level and boasts elegant design with the Pyrenees as a marvellous backdrop.

The Sport Hotel also includes sport, wellness and spa options for all its guests.

As for the rooms, you can choose from a ‘Junior Suite’ with slope views or if you really want to splash out go for the ‘Luxurious Suite’ with an independent living room, a terrace with stunning views, a palatial bath and even an iPad at your free for you to use as and when you wish.
