If you are a fan of ski mountaineering, you are probably aware that Canazei hosts one of the most famous international ski touring competitions. March 2016 will see the event’s 21st edition, and it is looking as promising and exciting as ever. Whether you are an amateur skier just intrigued by the challenge or a veteran interested in setting yourself a new goal, this tournament is worth a watch.
Open only to experienced, extreme skiers, the Sellaronda Skimarathon sees two-person teams conquer a total of 42 kilometres and a drop of more than 2700 metres. The fact that the whole race takes place at nighttime and seal skin is applied to the racers’ skis in order to provide some grip during the ascents makes this race only more enticing. Athletes have to demonstrate a wide array of skills and need to be able to adapt to any changes in the weather or atmospheric conditions in order to reach the finish line.
If this sounds like something you would like to see or participate in, Canazei is a three-hour drive away from its closest airport, Venice. Although taking public transport to the resort is possible, it doubles the length of the journey and you might find it especially difficult if you are bringing your own ski or winter-sport equipment. Shuttle Direct offers a private airport transfer from Venice Airport to Canazei from £301.19 that will take you and your equipment to your destination safely and comfortably.
