Cyprus is full of fantastic things to see and do – but also some wonderful things to eat. While you’re discovering the history, culture and tourist scene of this eastern Mediterranean paradise, you’ll probably come across some unfamiliar local foods that you simply must try.
If you want to know what to look out for on a Cypriot menu, simply keep reading this post to learn about some of the country’s best savoury dishes.
Louvi
If you’re keen to keep that summer bod you’ve been working on, look out for louvi, a healthy Cypriot staple. The main ingredient of this dish is black-eyed beans, and these are topped with boiled courgettes, oil, salt and lemon. This is a delicious plate to be enjoyed in the highs of summer since the ingredients are quite refreshing and it is often served alongside a cool cucumber salad.
Souvla
At the other end of the spectrum is souvla, a hearty, meaty dish that, unsurprisingly, is a local favourite. Pork, lamb or chicken is cooked on a large skewer over a charcoal barbeque and is often served with buttery potatoes and fresh salad. It’s the perfect dish to enjoy with friends and family on a summer evening.
Koupepia
You’ll no doubt spot this meal on menus in Cypriot restaurants, and trust me, it’s worth a try. Vegetables including peppers, courgettes, tomatoes and onions (and sometimes vine leaves) are stuffed with a variety of ingredients from minced meat to flavoured rice and other vegetables. They are then cooked in olive oil and served steaming hot. Koupepia is the perfect summer dish – healthy, fresh and delicious.
Trachanas
Trachanas is the ideal dish for vegetarians visiting the country. It can be tricky to find a meal in Cyprus that isn’t meat-based, but this thick soup is a great meat alternative. It is made from dried cracked wheat and soured goat’s milk, and is often topped with the nation’s favourite cheese, halloumi, which gives it a great texture and creamy taste.
Be sure to look out for all of these delicious savoury treats when you next head to Cyprus – whether you’re a veggie, a meat-lover or a health nut, you’re sure to find a delightful meal that you’ll be craving as soon as you return home.
