The small coastal resort of Cabanas de Tavira, in the Algarve, started up as a sleepy fishing village, but today its warm, sunny climate and stunning beaches attract thousands of tourists every year. Private Faro airport transfers can make sure the journey to your hotel is quick and easy before you set out to explore the resort at your own pace.
There are some worthy attractions in the area, so here are a few of the best…
Cabanas Beach
Cabanas beach is narrow and long, stretching out along Cabanas Island in front of the village. There are still many fishing boats anchored around the harbour, which are a reminder of the village’s origins; tuna fishing is still a strong industry here. Thankfully, the beach remains clean and unspoilt by the surge in tourism in the area – and it wouldn’t be a bad subject for a postcard with its picturesque white sand. Why not take the opportunity while you’re at the waterfront to visit one of the many excellent restaurants? You can try locally picked oysters and clams, or even one of the octopus dishes if you’re feeling especially adventurous. Aqua taxis will easily get you to the island, which is situated just off the mainland
Ria Formosa Natural Reserve
The Ria Formosa is a coastal lagoon and part of a larger network of lagoons and salt marshes. Nature lovers will certainly be enamoured with the Ria Formosa, owing to the rich marine and birdlife. The lagoon water is crystal clear, making this an excellent spot for snorkelling and you can spot seahorses and all sorts of other exotic marine animals if you’re lucky. Birdwatchers also come from afar to visit the lagoon to see flamingos, perhaps a glimpse of the rare purple swamp hen, and tens of thousands of migratory birds flying between Europe and Africa.
Another claim to fame of the reserve is that it is home to the Portuguese water dog breed. These dogs were bred to help fisherman retrieve fish caught in nets underwater and have become an increasingly popular household pet breed.
Culture and History
The Fortress
Forte de São João da Barra is the Portuguese name for this impressive structure, which was built in the 17th century to defend the port of Tavira from attack. From the outside you can see imposing stone walls and glimpses of a large traditional white building behind them, while on the inside you will find a pocket of complete peace and tranquillity. The walls shelter this settlement from the outside world and the traditional square with its armoury, well and water tank will make you feel as though you’ve been transported back to a different era.
The Fortress has now been converted to a hotel and the lavish interior decorations, including period pieces and contemporary paintings and sculptures, give the place an air of sophistication. A small boat is used to take guests to the deserted beaches and river. The main terrace of the fort is the perfect spot to enjoy breakfast overlooking the sea.
Additionally, Nosso Senhora do Mar is a beautiful little chapel that’s well worth a visit if you’re in the area.
Where to Stay
Golden Club Cabanas is an excellent choice for accommodation. The location is fantastic as it sits right at the heart of the Ria Formosa Natural Park and Favira is only a 10-minute drive away. The facilities include a spa, a gym, indoor and outdoor pools and other sports facilities. The restaurant provides a buffet service offering Mediterranean and regional Algarve cuisine. There is also a poolside bar that provides snacks during summer. The studios and apartments are suitable for couples and families and all accommodation options include a fully-equipped kitchen or kitchenette. Many also allow access to a terrace or balcony.
Accommodation at the Royal Cabanas Golf has all the conditions required for a relaxing and restful holiday. The apartment offers a sun-terrace, garden and outdoor pool. Cabanas beach is 1.3 miles away and there is both a bicycle rental service and car rental service available so you can get out and explore.
How to Get There
Once your flight has set down in Faro airport, transfers by shuttle bus can take you to Favira. I recommend pre-booking Faro airport transfers before you leave home as the best option.
