Peace At Last in Secluded Seget Donji

Remember when the word holiday meant just that? Time spent away from the hustle and bustle of your regular life, time to relax and contemplate and time to sit back and truly appreciate the art of doing very little? Well if your idea of holiday perfection is seclusion, serenity and superb scenery, Seget Donji is a secret you’re going to want to share.

Seget Donji: Secluded and Serene

The appeal of Croatia is well renowned and it’s become one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. For those looking for a low-key, yet no less beautiful location on the Adriatic coastline, the picturesque village of Seget Donji is the perfect solution. Within easy access of nearby Trogir (just 2km away) and the rest of the Trogir Riviera, this quaint fishing village offers an ideal blend of history, laidback culture and authentic Croatian charm.

Let’s see if I can tempt you.

Eat, Relax, Repeat

When you visit Croatia one of the overarching highlights is the cuisine, but there’s no need to worry that Seget Donji’s diminutive size might mean you’ll miss out on any of the good stuff. In fact it’s quite the opposite, and its location lends itself perfectly to some delicious authentic seafood dishes. There is good range of tavernas and restaurants from which to choose, but one of the most popular is Restaurant Frankie, which has a reputation for serving up the best seafood on the coast. Why not test the theory?

Top Tip: You should also try one (or more) of the restaurants or cafes dotted along the lovely pebble beaches. Food with a view… is there anything that tastes better?

Gentle Walks and Beautiful Beaches

If you want to get out for a little gentle walking, you can cover the couple of kilometres to Trogir by foot on the well-kept walkways and promenade to take in stunning coastal views and sea breezes. If you want to venture a little further afield, put on the comfy shoes and wander up the coast as far as Primošten. Of course the walk from your room to the pool might be quite far enough for you, and that’s ok too.

There are several very clean and pristine pebble beaches where you can dip your toes into the incredibly clear waters of the Adriatic – the best way to discover your favourite is to try them all.

Refined Evenings

If you get the urge to visit one of the nearby nightclubs on the beach, go right ahead. But if, like me, you prefer something a little less frenetic, several of the local hotels and restaurants in the village and surrounding areas offer live music in the evenings, so you can dine, dance and enjoy the spectacular sunsets at your leisure. Now that’s my kind of way to finish the day.

The Trogir Riviera

All along this stunning section of coastline you’re surrounded by the echoes of Dalmatian history. A string of villages make up the Trogir Riviera, and while they don’t appear to have too much to offer in the way of culture, it is their authenticity and historical relics that lend them such charm. Along with Seget Donji, some other villages you may want visit are Uvala Ljubljeva, Seget Vranjica, Vinišće, Marina and Sevid.

If you’ve got even a passing interest in history I recommend you visit the Old Town of Trogir (walk or take a taxi; it’s very close), to see the outstanding Cathedral, which is considered one of the most important pieces of architecture in the region.

Finally, a visit to the tranquil Pantan Natural Reserve is an absolute must for bird and nature lovers. This fascinating marshland is abundant with exotic flowers and plants, including a 1500-year-old olive.

Where to Stay

Hotel Ola: This lovely hotel is close to all the main attractions of Trogir and provides a truly relaxing holiday haven. With its balconies to take in the stunning views of the Adriatic and its spacious comfortable rooms with all amenities, there are some days you may not want to leave. The adults-only Hotel Ola has a gorgeous sun terrace, an outdoor pool with plenty of recliners and an excellent onsite restaurant.

Hotel Rotondo: Offering picturesque views of the port and spacious, well-appointed rooms, the Hotel Rotondo is situated in a great position overlooking the Adriatic. Be pampered in the spa wellness centre, take a dip in the pool or relax with a book on the sun-drenched terrace. You can also enjoy traditional Dalmatian cuisine in the onsite restaurant.

How to Get There

Getting to your laidback getaway in Seget Donji is easier than you might think. The most convenient option is to fly into Split Airport (SPU), which takes around two hours and 25 minutes from the UK. Lufthansa offers regularly-scheduled flights to Split and there are quite often some very cost-effective options available.

I’ve found that the best way to get from the airport at Split right to the door of your accommodation in Seget Donji is by pre-booking a private transfer with Shuttle Direct, before you leave home. A driver will meet you and you won’t have to wait around for other passengers – how convenient.
