History With a View in the Old Town of Tossa de Mar

Few destinations in Europe can so deftly combine the pleasure and relaxation of a beach holiday, with substantial history and culture as Spain. The renowned Costa Brava is no exception, and if you’re looking to delve into the past one day and soak up the delights of the Mediterranean beaches the next, Tossa de Mar, in Catalonia, is the perfect solution.

While not many people need tips on how to relax and enjoy a day at the beach, when it comes to the history of Tossa de Mar, a bit of insider knowledge might help.

Discover the Old Town

The word ‘discover’ is a little misleading, as you certainly won’t be able to miss the huge ramparts, ancient walls, and medieval architecture of the Old Town – aka Vila Vella. With roots dating back to the thirteenth century, it is the last surviving fortified medieval town along the Catalan coastline. You’ll find plenty of well-known highlights and you might ‘discover’ a few secret favourites for yourself…

The Castle Complex

The castle, or fortress as it is also known, dominates the skyline at the end of the main beach, encompassing a promontory and affording magical views over the ocean. Vila Vella is made up of numerous buildings, enclosed by defensive walls. The majority of the original structures are incredibly well-preserved, which makes it such an important cultural symbol and why it’s been designated a National Historical Monument.

The best way to explore is to just wander around the cobbled streets, taking in the architecture and interesting layout of the complex. You can stop along the way at one of many cafes or restaurants, and it’s particularly lovely to start your walk mid-afternoon, then stay for dinner and stunning sunset views over the Mediterranean.

The Church of Sant Vicenç

This fifteenth-century Gothic church is, sadly, now reduced to its bell tower, chapel and choir, but when you learn its history, it remains an evocative site to visit. During the French occupation it was used to store ammunition, and was very badly damaged after a gas explosion. Private residences were then built on some sections of the site, but ruins of the original structure remain in others. It’s well worth seeking out, not only for its cultural value, but for the simply spectacular views.

The Lighthouse

Sitting at the highest point of town, the lighthouse is a more modern addition, with construction completed in 1919. Its historical value is in that it stands on the foundations of an ancient medieval tower, but it’s also very interesting in its own right – housing an exhibition space on lighthouses of the Mediterranean.

Museum

Finally, don’t miss popping in to the Museu de la Vila Vella, where you can appreciate the intricate Roman mosaics, an interesting archaeological display denoting Tossa de Mar’s Palaeolithic connections, a host of well-curated artefacts from a Roman villa, and some works of art from the many artists who flocked here for inspiration in the 1930s.
