There are so many things to see and do in Tavira, and this Portuguese paradise promises great activities for all ages. Whether it’s a visit to the historic castle or a fun-filled day out at the water park, you’ll be spoilt for choice during your holiday. Here are a few top spots you shouldn’t miss.
The Castle
Perhaps the most iconic reminder of Tavira’s long and intriguing history, the castle is located right in the heart of the city.
Tourists are welcome to visit the castle for free at any time up until 5pm. The castle’s two square towers offer fantastic views out across the landscape, and you’re welcome to climb up to these to take in the beauty from above.
Did You Know: The city’s origins date back to 2000 B.C., at which point the Algarve was under Moorish rule. During these years, Tavira was an area of huge significance due to its thriving fishing industry.
Tavira Island Beach
The island is located to the south of the city and can only be reached by boat. Luckily, the vessels depart regularly from the city centre, so you’ll have no trouble catching a ride. The beach itself is regarded as one of the Algarve’s most beautiful and is a haven for nature-lovers.
Top Tip: Find out more information about boat departure times and prices just before you set off for Tavira – this will make everything go much smoother once you arrive.
Cycling & Kayaking
There’s nothing stopping you from exploring the area by bike! In fact, with several great cycle routes running through the landscape, it’s the perfect place. You can hire bikes out for up to three days, giving you plenty of time to explore the city’s many sites of interest.
The Ria Formosa Natural Park is one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal, and here you and the whole family can enjoy an afternoon of kayaking.
Top Tip: Hire a bike and try the Ecovia Litoral Algarve cycle route or the Great Route of the Via Algarviana.
Pego de Inferno
Also known as Moinhos de Rocha, Pego de Inferno is a beautiful lagoon located just 10km outside Tavira. The high waterfall is a breath-taking sight, with the blue-green Mediterranean water believed by some to flow into the famous Gilão River.
This is a fantastic spot to enjoy a lunchtime picnic with the youngsters in the sunshine, or even a dip in the inviting water if the weather is warm enough!
Water Parks
Whilst you’ll need to take a taxi to reach the water parks on the outskirts of Tavira, it’s well worth it. There are four excellent water parks across the Algarve, including Aquashow and Aqualand, so you really are spoilt for choice.
Where to Stay
Quinta de Moura Casa-de-Campo – Located less than 2 miles from Baril beach, Quinta de Moura Casa de Campo features a swimming pool and a charming garden area complete with BBQ facilities. The rooms themselves are modern in style and all feature air-conditioning, whilst most have an en-suite room, and all include satellite TV.
Casa Marcelino – Casa Marcelino’s location is ideal for those wishing to visit the castle, since it is just a mile from the apartment. The apartment includes one bedroom, a flat screen TV and free Wi-Fi as well as a kitchen complete with everything you might need during your stay.
