Located in sunny Gran Canaria is the picturesque sea resort of San Agustin. You won’t find wild nightlife or partying students here, just gorgeous weather and a quiet atmosphere, making this area the perfect destination for families. However, just because it’s laidback here, that doesn’t mean it’s boring – there’s definitely lots more to do than just sitting on the beach.
If you want a family getaway filled with adventure parks, adrenaline-fuelled activities and unique natural sites, you’re in luck – San Agustin has all the fun in the sun you could possibly want.
Sioux City
You may be in the Canary Islands, but a trip to Sioux City will have you feeling like you’re in the Wild West. This attraction is a recreation of – you guessed it – the American Wild West, complete with sheriffs and saloons, gunfights and barbecues, country music and can-can girls, cowboys and Indians and so much more.
The park is a perfect replica of what a typical town from this era would have looked like. Explore the ranch, bank, saloon, church and houses, as well as the nearby Indian reservation. The kids will especially love the adorable animals housed in the small zoo. Meet characters such as Doc Holliday the cowboy and White Herb the warrior, participate in shoot outs and watch attractions that range from rain dances and duels to the death to bank robberies and acrobats performing stunts with lassos, knives and whips.
Adults and children alike are in for a fun-filled day in Sioux City.
Go-Karting
If you and your family are adrenaline junkies, you’ll certainly get a kick out of go-karting. This exhilarating pastime is perfect for almost all ages – for example, the Gran Karting Club Gran Canaria offers a children’s track with small battery powered karts and minibikes for the younger participants and a junior track for pre-teens and teenagers. Those who are 16 or older are allowed on the main circuit, a challenging track that is definitely not for the faint of heart.
A second go-karting centre called Kart Racing Maspalomas also caters to both children and adults. However, if your little ones haven’t ever tried the sport before, this could be the ideal venue for you and your family as they offer a school complete with onsite coaching for inexperienced youngsters.
The Maspalomos Sand Dunes
The Maspalomos sand dunes have been a protected nature reserve since 1897 and, partially because of this, they have become a tourist hotspot. They are located right by the ocean, meaning you and your family can have a unique beach day here. This is an ideal place for taking photos, splashing around in the sea or just sunbathing on the golden sands.
Did you know? Legend has it that the sand from the dunes came from the Sahara Desert. However, in all actuality they come from exposed sand washed up from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean and blown to their current spot by the wind.
Where to Stay
Gloria Palace San Agustin Thalasso & Hotel – This resort promises to thrill the little ones just as much as Mum and Dad. It features outdoor pools for both adults and children, and you can even rent bicycles onsite – or, if you need a break, indulge in a spa day (although that may be more suited to the parents).
Las Barcas – If you and your family are looking to bond with each other, a stay at this accommodation is exactly what the doctor ordered. This apartment is the perfect home away from home, complete with daily cleaning services and a well-equipped kitchen. When you’d like to venture further afield to the shops and restaurants, you’re only a five-minute walk away. What more could you want?
Apartment Las Burras – This apartment is great for families. It is fully-equipped, has free Wi-Fi and features a terrace with lovely views. There is a full kitchen complete with a microwave and dishwasher, making budget-friendly meals abroad a piece of cake. The whole brood can snuggle up in the seating area to watch a movie on the TV after a long day sightseeing before getting some well-needed rest in the comfy beds.
How to Get There
You can easily get from the UK to Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) by plane. The journey takes just over four hours… not too long, but make sure you bring something for the little ones to do to minimise any whining. When you touch down, climb aboard a pre-booked airport transfer and you’ll be at your accommodation in San Agustin 25 minutes flat. If you’re travelling with kids, I recommend using Shuttle Direct’s transport services. They’re fast, reliable and affordable – all things you need when you’re lugging around little ones.
