If you are the kind of family that wants to make memories, spend quality time together and enjoy fun in the sunshine, then I have the perfect resort for you: Ixia, on the Greek island of Rhodes. Close to lovely Rhodes town, Ixia is a smaller resort with a wonderful beach. As one of the first purpose-built tourist hubs in the vicinity, Ixia benefits from being close to the bustling capital but still maintaining an out-of-town seaside feel. I just love the location of Ixia, its affinity with Greece, and the family-friendly atmosphere that resonates everywhere you go.
The Beach
Quieter than its neighbour, Ixia is a paradise for windsurfers who come here to enjoy the gentle breeze that is much appreciated by everyone enjoying the beach. In parts the shoreline is pebbly but there is plenty of soft sand to luxuriate on too.
Not only is the water crystal clear and fantastic for swimming but if you and the family fancy trying out a windsurfing lesson or two – or perhaps having a go at kite surfing or jet-skiing – this is the place to be.
Bars and restaurants line the beach but they are relaxed, quiet and family friendly, which I always think is a bonus when you need a lively atmosphere but don’t want to get caught up in crowds of tourists.
Windsurfing
When you and the kids fancy trying out windsurfing, you are in for a real treat here. Idyllic conditions are created from the perfect combination of blue skies, clear waters and the meltemi wind that comes about when there is a difference in temperature between the land and sea. Interestingly enough, the wind is at its strongest in the summertime, which makes this spot ideal for windsurfing and other water sports.
I suggest booking lessons with one of the many windsurfing centres that also hire out equipment.
A Trip to Rhodes
Rhodes is a mere ten-minute drive from Ixia and is a charming place to spend a day, or even longer. There is so much to see and do here in this city that is considered one of the best preserved in Europe. Rhodes is a place that has been influenced by the Hellenistic, Ottoman, Byzantine and Italian periods.
- On a visit you really have to take the kids to see the medieval town. The beauty of the old quarter is definitely memorable and the small alleyways lined with traditional buildings are fun to explore.
- For fabulous views of the city, head to the medieval clock tower. Youngsters will love climbing the stairs and parents will appreciate the fact that you can exchange your entry fee at the café when you head back down.
- Next on the agenda should be a visit to the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. Here you will be taken back in time to the medieval period and will be able to see furniture, paintings and many other artefacts from the time.
- There is the Archaeological Museum, the Suleman Mosque and The Fort of St Nicholas that are also worthy of a visit when you make a trip to this vibrant and historically important city.
Ixia is right up there on my top holiday destinations for families. With so much to do both on the doorstep and a short drive way, you won’t have to worry about the kids having nothing to do.
How to Get to Ixia
The nearest airport to Ixia is Rhodes International, a busy airport that receives several weekly flights from London. Sun-Air is the most popular airline making the four-hour trip but there are several others, such as easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2 that offer the service. Flights can be picked up for a real bargain, especially if you do your research.
