Why Families Love Sunny, Seaside Sa Coma

In the heart of the municipality of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar lies Sa Coma, a vibrant resort town on the east coast of the island of Mallorca, Spain. Sandwiched between Cala Millor to the north and S’illot to the south, Sa Coma puts Mallorca on the map, offering holidaymakers the chance to unwind and enjoy some well-earned fun in the sun.

Discover a Summer Paradise in Sa Coma

With its Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and mild winters, the best time to visit Sa Coma is between June and August. Compared to other towns on Mallorca, such as Magaluf, which is known as one of Europe’s hottest party destinations, Sa Coma has a reputation for being more family-oriented, with plenty of attractions to keep the kids entertained. One of the reasons families flock to Sa Coma is its range of all-inclusive resorts, which are designed with families in mind. With everything taken care of, you and your family can spend more time doing what matters.

Playa de Sa Coma

Stretching from Cala Moreia to Sa Punta de n’Amer, Playa de Sa Coma is a sweeping bay of soft sands that gently slope into clear waters, so there’ll be no complaining of sore feet! The waters are generally calm and shallow near the shoreline, making the conditions ideal for the little ones to paddle about. There are also various ramps dotted around the beach, so if you’re travelling with a buggy, you won’t need to worry about having to lug it through the sand. Playa de Sa Coma has even earned itself a coveted Blue Flag certification, which is awarded to beaches that meet high standards of water quality, cleanliness, and safety. If the kids get peckish, there are three kiosks along the beach and plenty of convenience stores and highly-rated restaurants with kids’ menus along the seafront. If you’re interested in water sports, consider hiring a pedalo boat and make memories on a pleasant cruise around the bay.

Sa Punta de n’Amer

Sa Punta de n’Amer, a 200-hectare peninsula adjacent to Playa de Sa Coma, was declared a Natural Area of Special Interest (ANEI) in 1985, ensuring that this portion of the coast remains protected and untouched. Sa Punta de n’Amer is a fantastic spot for hiking or a bike ride, with several trails winding through pine forests, dunes, and rocky outcrops. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a Mallorcan hedgehog or a cormorant on your travels!

Head to the Castell de sa Punta de n’Amer, a seventeenth-century defence tower and fortress, which was built to guard the coastline against pirate attacks from Africa and the Ottoman Empire. Unlike other talaies (watchtowers), this sandstone fortification has a distinctive square base. The kids will have a field day crossing the drawbridge over the moat to enter the tower and climbing the staircase to the roof terrace, which offers a stunning view of the sea and mountains. Check out the small museum in the tower, which showcases some of the original weapons and artefacts used to defend the coastline.

Drach Caves

In the former fisherman’s town of Porto Cristo, a nine-minute drive from Sa Coma, you’ll find the colossal Drach Caves, which extend for almost 1,200 metres in length and reach a maximum depth of 25 metres below ground level. The caves conceal Lake Martel, named after the French speleologist who first crossed it, Edouard Alfred Martel. Lake Martel is one of the largest underground lakes in the world, at 117 metres long and 30 metres wide. A path guides visitors through a striking underworld of illuminated stalagmites and stalactites, which bind together to form columns, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. Tours through the tunnels and caverns of the Drach Caves last an hour and culminate in a live concert that takes place on Lake Martel, featuring a quartet of classical musicians. After the performance, you can cross the lake by boat or on foot over the bridge.

Safari Zoo Mallorca

Located between Porto Cristo and Son Servera, this safari zoo, which is a cross between a leisure park and a wildlife park, is a fun day out for the entire family. A free bus service runs from Sa Coma to Safari Zoo Mallorca. The park is home to a whopping 600 animals and is open all year round, with extended opening hours over the summer period.

Once you’ve bought your tickets and entered the park, hop onto the safari train, which covers a three kilometre route and runs at regular intervals throughout the day. Take a seat in an open carriage and enjoy the ride through the wilderness as you pass by exotic animals such as gazelles and gnus. A special highlight are the cheeky monkeys who, if you’re lucky, will approach the train and introduce themselves to you! Arrive nice and early and you’ll be able to see the animals being fed. Make sure you pay a visit to the “baby zoo”, where young elephants and reptiles can be found. Lunch is available at an on-site restaurant and there are several playgrounds to keep the kiddies happy.

You’ll meet at a designated point at the airport to board a bus with other passengers, before being dropped off near your accommodation. Although this is not a door-to-door service and you’ll have to share the ride with other passengers, the cost savings are significant.

Private transfer: Unlike a shuttle bus or public transport, with a private transfer from Palma Mallorca Airport to Sa Coma you have the luxury of a door-to-door service without additional stops, and you won’t have to travel with other passengers. Your private driver will be waiting for you at the airport upon arrival, ready to whisk you away to your accommodation – saving you time and avoiding long waits or delays. Gone are the days of waiting in endless queues after a long flight!

Minibus transfer: If you’re travelling with friends or family, booking a minibus transfer from Palma Mallorca Airport to Sa Coma is the best solution for simplifying the logistics. Not only will you have extra room to sit comfortably during your trip, but you’ll also be dropped off right to the door of your accommodation. Easy-peasy!

Choosing the Right Transfer

Travelling is never one size fits all, because everyone has different priorities. At Shuttle Direct, we understand that every traveller is unique. Choosing the right transfer often comes down to cost and convenience and which is more important to you.

Cost: If you’re keeping a close eye on your holiday budget and saving money is at the top of your priority list, then look no further than a shuttle bus. Operating on a fixed schedule, shuttle buses are reliable and cost-effective without compromising on your comfort or safety.

Convenience: If, on the other hand, you value convenience and having your own space is non-negotiable, then either a pre-booked taxi or a luxury private transfer is the answer. You’ll decide the pick-up and drop-off locations, making these options more convenient than navigating public transport.
