Costa Brava South Carnival

Let your kids join in the fancy dress competitions at the Costa Brava South Carnival!

For families travelling to Lloret de Mar to escape the dreary grey of February in the UK, a real treat lies in store. Most regular visitors to Spain will be familiar with the way the Spanish celebrate, but the Costa Brava South Carnival takes the festivities to another level – a full six days of pure entertainment is bound to keep all the family enthralled!

The very young kids will enjoy the children’s shows and the fancy dress competitions, while the parades and street performances are entertainment enough for older children and adults alike. As you would expect from a celebration in Spain, there is never a dull moment at this carnival.

Food and drink can be purchased at the cafes and bars, as well as at the street stalls that have been set up for the duration of the event. I love the fact that this festival is free and you can come and go as you please, so if you have very little children that need a change of scene every so often, you are not bound to stay all day because you have bought a ticket.

Mediaeval Fair

Mediaeval Fair
The Mediaeval Fair takes everyone who visits on a journey back in time.

Livening up the month of November, this mediaeval fair takes everyone who visits on a journey back in time. As you wander the streets of Lloret de Mar, your kids will be amazed by the tightrope walkers, jugglers and jesters, as well as the tradespeople and artisans demonstrating the crafts and trades of the time. There is storytelling and street theatre just as there would have been hundreds of years ago, and even an authentic market with some great exhibitions and stalls.

Youngsters will learn lots at the Mediaeval Fair and are bound to love getting involved and absorbing themselves in this historic world. After only a few moments, you really do feel like you are in another time!

Town of Giants Festival

To honour the legend of the giants Es Nais and Miss Ling, the town holds several festivals throughout the year in which Gayants, which are huge papier-mâché figures, parade the streets alongside the capgrossos, which are large papier-mâché heads. Legend has it that Miss Ling was so captivated by the beautiful beaches of Lloret, the charming town, and indeed the sailors who frequented the area, such as Es Nais, who eventually won her heart, that she decided to stay forever. The celebratory festivities are definitely not to be missed, and taking place over a whole weekend, you can definitely catch them in the months of June and November.

There are parades, dances, music, the ceremonious giving of gifts and much more, all carried out in traditional Catalan style. The costumes are incredible and your children will be astounded at the giant figures that dominate the streets over the whole weekend.

If Lloret de Mar is your chosen winter holiday destination, then make sure you don’t let the kids miss out on the magical celebrations on the evening of the 5th January, which is the equivalent of Christmas Eve for Spanish children. On this night, the three kings arrive into Lloret de Mar on floats adorned with lights and full of sweets, gifts and confetti, which they throw out to the crowd on the streets. Children from all over line up along the streets with paper lanterns, which they light to welcome the visitors. This festival is all about the kids and, no matter how old they are, they will be amazed by the spectacle here.

Get your children to look out for the little shoes left on the windowsills of the local houses on the same evening. These have been put out by little Spaniards to let the Kings know where to leave their presents!
