The Alps are known for their stellar winter sporting options, but that’s not the only way to explore these famous slopes. If you’re like me and prefer to take in the views on foot rather than on skis, I have some good news for you. The pretty little Austrian village of Kitzbühel, while an excellent location for sport aficionados, offers plenty of ways to explore the dreamy Alpine area, including carriage rides, walking and more.
City Walks
Stroll through lovely Kitzbühel to best take in all the sights, sounds and other delights the city has on offer. The city centre is worth the walk alone, and that’s not to mention all the colourful buildings that really bring the town alive. Be sure to leave plenty of time to check out the town’s many shops and cafés.
Carriage Rides
For something truly memorable (or an extremely charming date idea), take a relaxing ride around Kitzbühel in a horse-drawn carriage. This is a great way to check out nearby Schwarzsee Lake while staying bundled and cosy. If you visit during the snowy season, don’t be surprised if your carriage is actually a sleigh!
Archery and Sledging
Feeling up for an adventure? Right next to Kitzbühel is a town called Kirchberg, with a shooting range for all your archery needs. Take aim and practise your archery skills on fake animals or targets in a beautiful model forest setting.
Or, if sledging is more your style, enjoy an adrenaline-pumping ride down a toboggan track, also in neighbouring Kirchberg. Take advantage of the slope’s great hours, since it’s open day and night to accommodate everyone’s schedule. Don’t forget to pack your gloves, scarf and other warm winter gear for this activity!
Winter Hiking or Snowcat Ride
The stunning Alpine scenery of the surrounding Jochberg forests is best seen on foot, so get ready to don your winter gear for hiking in the village’s surrounding area. The local tourist office offers free daily tours for those interested in learning more about the area’s terrain.
Snowcat rides are also available for a wintery experience like no other. Interested visitors can take a chairlift to the top of the mountain, and then embark on your snowcat ride to the Bichlalm area from there.
Visiting nearby villages
The surrounding villages of Jochberg and Kirchberg are equally lovely to visit, so be sure to make time for a trip to some of these nearby towns to enjoy the sights or grab a meal. In the summer, you can mountain bike between towns, or hire a car or don some skis during the colder winter months.
