The Perfect 48-hour Getaway in Lagos

Recently, I had a conversation with someone who spent some time on the south coast of Portugal in the Algarve region, which is home to well-known cities like Faro, Albufeira, and Lagos. As he was talking to me about the nightlife, outdoor activities and water sports he experienced; the historical, picture-perfect sightseeings; the dreamy weather that helps replenish vitamin D levels, and the Mediterranean food… I could feel myself starting to crave to go there.

Perhaps the fact that I am a Colombian, constantly searching for sunny weather and beaches, puts the Algarve on my bucket list. If I ever get a chance to go this is how I would spend an ideal 48 hours in Lagos.

Lagos

Day One

Explore the Old Town

Exploring the Old Town of Lagos is a must-do experience. Take a stroll along its cobbled streets and indulge in some authentic Portuguese cuisine for lunch. In the afternoon, visit the local museums, such as Ciência Viva Science Centre and Mercado de Escravos. Other notable sites are the Forte Ponta da Bandeira, or Igreja de Santo António,

Jump on an Afternoon Boat Tour of the Coastline

There are many boat companies that offer a boat adventure that will give you the chance to experience the coast and the city from another perspective.  Tours also provide unique opportunities to try out activities like snorkelling.

Dinner at the Marina

Located in the north end of Lagos, the Marina is famous for its romantic ambiance. Enjoy the together moments of  having dinner  and wine as you watch the sun set. The menu offers a range of dishes to suit all tastes, although the traditional seafood is highly recommended.

Day Two

Walk to Ponta da Piedade

The Ponta de Piedade is a site not to be missed. Located just a short distance from Lagos, a pleasant 40-minute walk will bring you to the natural wonder with its arching rocks and dramatic cliff edges towering 20m over the sea.  If you’re feeling a bit tired there you can always book a shuttle car from your hotel or there’s also a train that serves the area. You might consider taking a picnic to eat as you take in the stunning view, and you even might want to venture down the cliffs via the steps to explore the beach.

Relax on the Beach

Lagos offers plenty of options for beach lovers to relax and enjoy the stunning coastal scenery. One must-visit destination is the renowned Benagil Cave, which can be reached by organised boat trips, privately rented vessels or kayak.  If you want more of these phenomenal rock formations go to Praia Dona Ana, and for a golden sand beach experience try Meia Praia and Praia do Camilo.

Visit the Castelo de Lagos

Also known as Governor’s Castle, this fortress is an important historical landmark in Lagos. Although the castle suffered significant damage during the earthquake of 1755, there are still remnants that offer glimpses into its past.
