Picture this: the Mediterranean sun beats down on the weather-beaten walls of an ancient acropolis that stands proudly at the summit of a rocky mound. Whitewashed facades of the settlement below and humble homes scattered along the slope’s contours lead the eye towards a sparkling turquoise sea that surrounds the land. This is Lindos: a perfect encapsulation of traditional Grecian romance. No wonder it’s one of the most photographed destinations in Greece.
But far more than just a pretty picture, this charming destination also boasts a glorious history. Although it’s a modern-day hotspot for those seeking sun and snapshots, it is renowned as a major naval power of ancient times, a history that is visible in the architecture which demonstrates a fascinating blend of ancient and medieval.
With its rustic charm and captivating past, Lindos is the ideal destination for travellers looking to stray off the beaten path for that perfect holiday photograph. I’ve curated a list of some of our favourite photogenic sites to ensure that you never miss a shot.
The Acropolis
Wandering through the ruins of the crumbling citadel is like a journey through time. Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans; all have left their mark on this small harbour, a tumultuous history that is told through the medium of stones and pillars.
Once you’ve climbed the steep slope of the rocky hill that would have provided the perfect vantage point for spotting invading ships (today it offers fantastic panoramic views of surrounding area), you enter a lost world through the ancient gate. You’ll be taken through multiple centuries passing the Greek Orthodox Church, indicating the fortification of the site by the Knights of St John, a Hellenistic stoa (covered walkway) and a monumental staircase that leads to a sanctuary made up of buildings dating as far back at the fourth century BC; all of which is surrounded by a stark medieval wall.
The most notable structure, however, is the impressive Doric temple dedicated to the Goddess Athena. According to tradition, the divine statue was erected and worshipped by Danaus and his fifty daughters, who found refuge on the island from the rage of the Goddess Hera.
Take it to the Beach
With its crystal-clear waters and shore of soft golden sand, the town’s main beach – just a short walk from the central square – is the perfect place to get that ‘wish you were here’ shot. Along the coastline you’ll find straw umbrellas offering shade from the Mediterranean sunshine, unassuming Greek tavernas serving refreshing drinks and a range of places offering water sports for those seeking an adrenaline rush. If you’re looking to capture a truly special photo, I recommend renting a paddle boat or motorboat that will take you out on the water. Looking back, you’ll be treated to a spectacular view of the emerald sea lapping against the shoreline, the bright white local houses cascading down the hill with the magnificent acropolis perching on its rocky throne.
The Church of Panagia
Multiple arches are stacked on top of each other to form a distinctive bell tower, topped with an ornate cross that reaches into the blue sky. It’s hard to miss the Church of Panagia, and a site you wouldn’t want to pass by. High stone walls encircle the entire structure, and as you pass through the entrance you’ll be able to admire the campanile tower that looms above, before entering the building itself. Once inside, delicate chandeliers and colourful frescoes will capture your gaze, leading your eyes upwards. Traditional Rhodian flooring spills out under your feet in patterned pebble mosaics.
Tsambika Byzantine Museum
This exquisite monastery-turned-museum stands with a regal elegance, it’s blazing white walls contrasting against the cerulean sky. The pebbled courtyard is dotted with grand trees that offer a cool relief from the sun with their leafy canopy. Inside, it’s easy to lose track of time with every surface carefully covered in ornate carvings and glinting gold; from the vaulted ceiling to the stone floor, not a centimetre is left untouched.
Seek out a Dama-Dama Deer
Unique to Rhodes, this stunning species of deer has long been sentimental to the Dodecanese island. So much so that during antiquity Rhodes was known by the name Elafioussa, meaning ‘with a lot of deer’. Today, their legacy as the symbol of the island survives in the two deer statues that stand proudly in the Mandraki Harbor in Rhodes Town.
These sprightly mammals stand out with beautifully coloured coats that change according to the season; a rich auburn that fades to white as it runs toward the belly. Flecked with white camouflage spots, they make a gorgeous subject for wildlife lovers. Especially the bucks, who appear majestic with their sturdy symmetrical antlers sitting atop their heads like a crown. Catching a sighting of one of these kingly beasts is a much sought after experience!

How to Get There
Flights from London to Rhodes (RHO) airport are frequent, with around 39 flights per week going out with nine different airlines. Prices are pretty steady throughout the year, but you’ll find tickets cheapest between August and October. Sun-Air is a popular airline with flight duration of around 4 hours.
