The Best of the Beaches Around Mijas Costa

From Malaga to Marbella, the Spanish coastline has all kinds of beaches to choose from. Whether your idea of a perfect afternoon is sunning yourself on a lounger as the waves lap at the shoreline or you’re an adventure-seeker looking for the best scuba dive launch spots, the region of Mijas Costa has something for everyone.

Although they can get busy during peak season, even the most popular beaches quieten down over the months before and after, leaving them open to the offbeat travellers. The area boasts sheltered stretches of sand great for a relaxing day out to rockier areas with towering cliffs that make for great photo opportunities.

Discover the top beaches to choose from around the beautiful Spanish shore.

El Bombo

This one’s a crowd-pleaser. A relaxing 320-metre long sandy curve that leads into a calm bay, ending in a small rocky cliff. The combination of shelter and gradual sloping makes it a popular place for scuba divers, snorkelers and even underwater swimmers. Sunbeds are also available to hire, while the small beach bar is great for snacks and drinks.

Playa Peñon del Cura

If you are looking for some underwater fun and interested in trying your hand at scuba diving, Playa Peñon del Cura is the place to go. It might appear rugged and rocky, but conditions are excellent for this water sport. It also leads into the vast stretch of sandy shoreline, El Faro, meaning you can combine a morning of adventure with an afternoon of sunbathing. Best of both worlds!

El Faro

As mentioned above, this part of the coast is a sun-seeker’s paradise. Boasting over 1,000 metres of well-maintained sand, it’s popular amongst tourists and locals alike. You’ll often see fishermen set up in the afternoon and fish long into the night: fresh fish for breakfast, anyone? There’s a lovely laidback atmosphere here and definitely a must-visit on your trip.

Playa Del Chaparal

It’s a good thing that this spot is a literal hidden gem. Playa Del Chaparal, otherwise known as Playa Naturista, is the area’s dedicated nudist beach. So, if you feel like letting it all go this holiday, make your way here where you can let it all hang out and enjoy the fresh sea air with like-minded holiday-makers! Of course, you don’t have to take your clothes off to have a good time here – it’s also perfect for snorkelling and there’s a welcoming beach bar that serves up tasty food and rents out sunbeds.

Nerja

Playa La Cala de Mijas

Beautiful in both winter and summer, this 2,000 metre long beach is well-equipped for travellers of all types. Thanks to the pleasant promenade lined with bars and restaurants, there is a buzzing atmosphere around this part of the coastline, making a great choice for evening strolls (or swims, if you can brave the cold!).

This is also ideal for thrill-seekers in the summer when all sorts of water sports gear is available to hire in abundance.

Calahonda

Last, but by no means least, Calahonda is Mijas Costa’s longest beach, offering up over 4,500 metres of golden sand. By far the most popular of all the beaches mentioned, the central location right at the foot of the city makes it a hub of activity. It’s a great spot to mingle with the locals or get to know other visitors over a drink at one of the nearby beach bars. However, there are also a few quieter spots for those looking to get away from the crowds.
