10 Reasons to Plan a Trip to Mestre, Venice

When most people think of a trip to Venice, they immediately picture gondolas gliding down winding canals, the iconic St Mark’s Square, and the breathtaking architecture that defines the heart of the city. While these are undoubtedly captivating, there’s a lesser-known, yet equally charming, destination that should be on every traveller’s radar: Mestre. Just a stone’s throw away from the historic centre of Venice, Mestre offers a unique and immersive experience that complements the Venetian adventure. In this blog post,

4 Historical Highlights of Venice

Venice is one of the most treasured jewels in Italy’s considerable crown and, as a tourist destination, is a perennial favourite with visitors from all over the world. This extraordinary floating city is fascinating and compelling in equal measure. It is steeped in a long and turbulent history and brimming with art and culture, which is evident at every turn through its many galleries, museums and, of course, its exquisite architecture.   For visitors looking to explore a little of Venice’s

3 Family Days Out in Lido di Jesolo

We all know how popular Venice is for a summer holiday. The iconic floating city draws millions of tourists to its compact streets every year to marvel at its beauty and unique character. While taking the kids to this once-of-a-kind city is a great experience, spending more than a couple of days there can be exhausting – not exactly the relaxing getaway you plan on. So, let me introduce you to the resort seaside town Lido di Jesolo, the family-friendly

Venice Shore Excursions

Today’s visitor to the former Republic of Venice is met with the decaying grandeur of what was once one of the world’s wealthiest city states. The proceeds from its involvement in the lucrative world of commerce and shipping helped finance the construction of many grand palaces, churches and piazzas mainly between the 9th and 13th centuries. Such a wealth of attractions has contributed to Venice becoming a victim of its own success as a tourist destination as 30 million visitors per year threaten the fragile ecosystem of the city and its lagoon. Such is this threat that UNESCO are considering

’Sno Laughing Matter: the Cortina Snow Run

If you adore the stunning Alpine setting of Europe’s ski resorts but want a new challenge that doesn’t involve skis, then why not try the Cortina Snow Run. This 17km night time run – held on 25 February next year – will take you through the stunning Dolomites scenery, running on prepared pistes, on a course which organisers believe should take no more than five hours.

Trieste

Trieste Shore Excursions

The city of Trieste lies on the north-eastern coast of Italy near its border with Slovenia. Cruise ship passengers who have visited the great cities of Italy are in for a pleasant surprise when arriving in the Port of Trieste. Standing at a crossroads of Central European cultures the city was part of the Habsburg Monarchy for six centuries before it became part of modern Italy in 1954. As such it is perhaps Italy’s least Italian city being more reminiscent of Prague, Budapest or Vienna than it is of Rome, Florence or Naples.   Port of Trieste Cruise ships visiting

Venezia Bergamo

Historic Highlights Between Venice and Bergamo

From glamorous churches to fascinating museums, a trip to Italy is like entering a magical time warp – presuming, of course, that pizza and pasta were just as delicious several centuries ago! Although every ambitious tourist wanders through the ancient ruins of Rome and the winding streets of Venice, it’s worth venturing off the beaten path to fully immerse yourself in the country’s rich history. If you’re a true history buff, why not wave goodbye to the masses of tourists and opt for a more authentically Italian experience in its smaller cities? On our route from Venice Marco Polo Airport

Uncover Venice’s Hidden Gems

Venice is made up of over one hundred charming little islands separated by canals, which hide many veiled gems in their passageways. It is a beautiful Italian city that has so much to offer, boasting unique architecture with stunning marble palaces and countless bridges that attract travellers from across the globe every year. While Venice is often considered a tourist trap – and although this may be arguably true in the busy summer months – if you look beyond the superficial sightseer’s checklist, it has plenty of quirky and original activities just waiting to be discovered. Diverge from the traditional

Lido di Jesolo

3 Reasons for Families to Love the Beach at Lido di Jesolo

Italy may not be the first place to spring to mind when planning an affordable sun-sea-and-sand holiday, but it has a hidden gem that I am recommending as this summer’s top spot for families on a budget. Tucked away in north-east Italy near Venice is the sunny purpose-built beach resort of Lido di Jesolo – an area dubbed the “Venetian Riviera” by tour operators. This friendly beach town is shaped by tourism, so you can be sure that everything is very clean, safe and well-organised. Not only this, but Lido di Jesolo has plenty to keep the little ones, as

Bohinj

Breathtaking Lake Bohinj, Slovenia: Paradise for Nature-Lovers

If you’ve visited Britain’s Lake District and have explored the Italian lakes and you’re dreaming of finding an area of equal natural beauty that is unscarred by the pressures of tourism, then Bohinj in Slovenia may be just what you’re looking for.

Nestled in the Julian Alps and set in the stunning Triglav National Park, Lake Bohinj is the country of Slovenia’s largest permanent lake. Fed by the glacial melt waters of the surrounding mountains, the water is as clear as glass, and in summer it is warm enough to entice bathers, kayakers and sailors to its pristine beaches.

But, despite the natural beauty of the lake, I found one of the most appealing aspects of a holiday here was the sensation that I’d stepped off the tourist trail and into an authentic Alpine way of life that has been consistent here for hundreds of years.

From the unspoilt natural beauty (with some of the most beautiful displays of Alpine flowers I’ve ever seen) to the traditional food, this was a holiday in which I felt enriched by discovering a country I’d hardly known anything about before I arrived.

Levico

Must-Dos in Lake Levico

While the summer crowds and the families flock to Italy’s famous Lake Garda, those looking for a more tranquil lakeside holiday should head north to the stunning mountains of the Vigolana range and the beautiful Lake Levico.

With its dramatic mountain scenery and steep banks, many locals describe Levico as a ‘fresh-water fjord’, and it does indeed have some of the majesty and appeal of the Norwegian shoreline. But what makes this area so special is the combination of its warm climate and peaceful environment.

Set on the shores of the lake is Levico Terme, a nineteenth-century spa town which has offered therapeutic aquatic treatments to those coming to experience the unique thermal waters for more than 150 years.

Cortina d'Ampezzo

Eating Out in Classy Cortina d’Ampezzo

While there aren’t many among us hardworking mortal folk who can afford to bask in the lifestyle of the rich and famous every day (unless you really are rich and famous, in which case I guess you can!), there’s no harm in splashing out every now and again. So, if you feel the need to escape for a short, luxurious break, whether it’s for skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer, the glamorous northern Italian resort town of Cortina d’Ampezzo is the ideal spot to get a taste of the lifestyle to which you’d love to become accustomed.
