Surfing the Waters
Though Costa Calma translates literally to “calm coast,” you’ll find there are plenty of waves and swells to surf all year round. In the autumn and winter, the western-moving winter swells create great waves for beginning and expert surfers alike. With temperatures rarely falling below 18oC, the coast is a pleasantly temperate paradise in every season.
If you’re new to surfing, the Costa Calma is home to a number of surf shops that offer lessons for beginners. Most surf classes will be held in groups of six to eight and can last anywhere from two to four hours. Any surf school can help you out in choosing the right equipment, which includes not only the board, but a wetsuit for cooler waters, or board shorts and vests for warmer weather.
Learning to surf is a bit like riding a bike – that is: it requires balance, a lot of patience and it can only be mastered after falling spectacularly a few times. The key to surfing is understanding how and where the waves will break in order to ride them. At the Costa Calma, the location of the best waves may change daily depending on the weather and wind patterns. Your surf instructor will know where the best waves are for your surf level and can point you in the right direction.

Surfing the Winds
Once you’ve experienced riding the waves, you might be ready to try windsurfing or kite boarding, both of which will have you skimming over the waters of Costa Calma on the ocean breeze.
Windsurfing combines elements of sailing and surfing with a mast, boom and sail attached to a board, which is piloted by the rider. Costa Calma’s Sotavento Beach has hosted several windsurfing championships in years past, and is known for its excellent and consistent wind conditions.
Kite boarding involves a similar mix of wind and waves, but is slightly more extreme. This sport combines elements of wakeboarding, surfing, paragliding and gymnastics in one dizzying experience. The boarder is strapped to the board by the feet and wears a waist harness attached to a power kite by several metres of line. Experienced kite boarders can execute turns, jumps and board grabs in midair and have been known to gain 40 feet of air in high winds!
