Though the Alpine town of Morzine is best known as a ski resort, its stunning scenic location makes it a brilliant year-round destination. In the summer months, nature lovers flock to the town to explore the mountainous region on foot, by bike and even by helicopter.
Morzine for Nature Lovers
Morzine sits at a rather low altitude for a ski resort. At just one thousand metres above sea level, the lower pistes are often closed early and late in the season. Though this might be bad news for keen skiers, it is great news for nature lovers. Morzine’s snowy slopes transform into gentle, rolling pastures in the summer months opening up a range of activities which make the most of the beautiful scenery.
There is plenty to see and do here outside of ski season.
- Fishing: As the warm summer breeze ripples the still waters of Lac Mines d’Or or Lac Plan du Rocher, a spot of fishing is a great way to enjoy the Alpine scenery. You can fish in many of the lakes, as well as in the River Dranse. This important waterway runs from Morzine to Evian and it is here that the Lake Geneva trout spawn their eggs. Of course, you will have to check out the local rules on fishing and make sure you have the right permits.
- Geocaching: Geocaching is a fun way to explore the local area at your own pace. Using the GPS on your phone or tablet you track down caches in the area. These are small boxes or bags containing “treasures” left by previous geocachers. You won’t find piles of gold, but you will find small souvenirs and items that could be from all over the world. The idea is that you take one and leave your own – making your own mark.
- Helicopter Tour: Splash out on a real treat and book a helicopter tour. In the summer, these flights are magnificent, with breath-taking views across snow-capped peaks, verdant forests and sparkling glaciers. Tours are available year-round but do depend on the weather, so check before you book.
- Hiking: With over eight hundred kilometres of trails in the region, there are hikes around Morzine suitable for all fitness levels. Shorter walks will take you to beautiful waterfalls like the Cascade de Ardent or to scenic lakes like the Lac de Montriond.
- Golf: If you are a keen golfer, head to the 18-hole course in Les Gets. With panoramic views from the green, this golf course must be one of the most scenic in the world. However, if you want a bit of a challenge you won’t be disappointed by this technical course. The clubhouse has a lovely terrace and is the perfect place for an afternoon drink in the sun.
- Carriage Ride: For 15€ per person, you can experience a horse-drawn carriage ride around Morzine and its charming hamlets. The trip takes guests through the old town and up to Lac Montriond. This is a great way to spend an afternoon – rides begin at midday.
Top Tip: These carriage rides are first come, first served. They begin from the Tourist Office, so get there with plenty of time to spare.
- Markets: My final suggestion is less nature-focused. By visiting the local markets you can see the excellent produce from the lands around. Divine regional cheese, local meats and fruit and veg can all be found at the weekly markets in Morzine, as well as nearby Chatel and Les Gets.
