France
In France, you’ll notice that croissants are often dunked into café au lait, so the mugs are large, wide and held with both hands. If you’re travelling there, avoid ordering additional flavourings or whipped cream, and don’t order filter coffee. The drink is often enjoyed throughout the day, but most commonly in the mornings or after dessert.
Italy
The Italians are widely known for their culinary expertise, and are rather particular when it comes to coffee. In Italy, you must only order your caffeine fix after you eat, unless you fancy a cappuccino – these are only consumed in the mornings. If you really want to blend in, you should drink espresso without milk, followed by a glass of water. Italians drink their espressos quickly, like a shot, so don’t take small sips or they’ll be able to tell that you’re an amateur.
Spain
The most popular caffeinated drink in Spain (and parts of Portugal) is a cortado, a beverage inspired by espresso but a little weaker. It’s usually enjoyed after breakfast or a siesta. To make cortado, simply add warm milk to your espresso.
Turkey
Turkish coffee is incredibly strong, so you may not want to order too much while you’re there. It is usually enjoyed after meals along with special local candies, and is served black. Sugar is added to a large cooking pot before being poured rather than after, and the brewing process takes several minutes. You may notice some locals staring into their cups once they have finished their beverage – this is because the grounds are meant to tell your fortune.
