Soak Up the Charm and Culture of Kas

Turkey has long been a favourite with tourists, not only for its beautiful beaches, but also for the abundance of cultural attractions. Its fascinating heritage and ancient history can be discovered around every corner and down every backstreet in the cities, towns and villages.

Kas, a town with a picturesque harbour set along the Turquoise Coast, may be relatively small, but it’s certainly memorable. Embraced by a diverse landscape – with the azure waters of the Mediterranean as its outlook and the wooded mountains, dotted with fruit plantations and hiking trails, as its backdrop, its appeal is wide-ranging to visitors looking to relax, explore and delve into its culture.

Soak Up the Charm and Culture of Kas

After you’ve soaked up its lively, friendly ambience by simply wandering around the resort town, you might want to explore a little deeper. Here’s an overview of Kas’ highlights.

History and Culture

There’s history and culture seeping from its very pores, and on a stroll through the town you’ll encounter numerous classical relics that tell the storied past of the first settlers – the Greeks. In the surrounding region there are temples and monuments in various states of ruin that are fascinating to visit. Over the years the entire area has been a place of great interest to archaeologists, who have uncovered the ruins of several ancient towns.

One of the major historical attractions of the town is the impressive stone sarcophagus, known as the Lion’s Tomb. It presides on a hilltop behind the town, which also affords wonderful views over the Mediterranean.

Just a short, easy walk out of town is the Antiphellos (amphitheatre), which dates back to the first century BC and makes a wonderful place from which to watch a spectacular sunrise or sunset. While there, take the opportunity to ruminate on its Hellenistic history – back to the days when it held up to 4,000 spectators. It’s in remarkably good condition and is well worth a visit.

Local Shopping

Throughout the charming streets of the town there are lots of quirky little shops and boutiques where you can pick up some local handicrafts, souvenirs, silver jewellery, ceramics, leather goods, handmade shoes, artworks and antiques.

The main bazaar is called Uzun Çarşı Caddesi, and lines both sides of one of the larger streets, and there’s also several smaller markets where traders sell everything from fresher than fresh seafood to locally-grown fruit. If you’re particularly interested in purchasing some local art, Tuğra Art Gallery is a very authentic place to go.

Get into the Outdoors!

Kas is an absolute dream destination for anyone who likes getting out into the great outdoors, and the surrounding region is superb for hiking (it makes up part of the famous Lycian Way).

Sea kayaking is a brilliant way to see the coastline from a different angle, and you can get out and about either on your own or as part of a tour. A favourite spot to kayak is the nearby island of Kekova, where you can view the underwater ruins of a submerged city from the surface.

There are few better ways of soaking up the fresh air than on the beach, and the area offers plenty for your pleasure. While the town itself doesn’t really have an accessible beach, as such (although the waters are good for diving or snorkelling), along the coastline very close by there are lots of small coves which offer safe swimming. The most renowned beach in the region is the 20 km stretch at nearby Patara, or you can visit Liman Ağzı (a few kilometres away) or the very popular Kaputaş Beach, on the road to Kalkan,
