Mijas Costa is a long stretch of the Costa Del Sol encompassing the popular holiday resorts of Calahonda, Riviera del Sol and La Cala de Mijas. The region is reached most easily by flying to Malaga Airport. Transfer by shuttle bus from here to your accommodation and you can begin your lazy beach holiday – there really is no better place for it!
Much of the area has been built over the last 50 years, and so the infrastructure is catered specifically towards holidaymakers. With stunning beaches, charming bars and restaurants, play areas for kids and lively nightlife, this is an excellent all-round holiday destination.
Mijas Pueblo
Mijas Pueblo is a classic Andalusian white village, removed somewhat from the more touristy part of Andalusia. The village remains mostly peaceful and quiet, a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of busier settlements in the region. It is nestled into the side of a mountain up high and there are stunning views to be enjoyed over the Costa Del Sol.
The village dates all the way back to the Bronze Age, so history buffs should definitely place this one on their to-do list. There are a number of different architectural styles competing for attention as you walk down the village streets – this is a result of the town’s occupation by Phoenicians, Romans, Moors and Christians at different periods throughout the past.
You might even spot one of the famous burro taxis (tourist carriages pulled by donkeys) as you wander through the village. Using donkeys for tourism has been phased out in most parts of Spain, but the local council has imposed strict regulations to make sure the donkeys are well looked after.
The Aquatic Park
Aquamijas Mijas Water Park is one of the many water parks that has cropped up in Malaga and become extremely popular with tourists. It’s no wonder there are so many; a day at a water park is an exciting excursion for families, couples and solo travellers alike.
Aquamijas Mijas has a total of five water slides, mini golf, a rock-climbing wall and several Jacuzzis. Dry off in one of the large picnic areas or gardens after you’ve had your aquatic fun. There’s a cafeteria, self-service restaurant and many kiosks selling pizza, ice cream and other snacks. With such fantastic attractions and excellent amenities, it’s really easy to spend a whole day at one of these parks – and in my opinion it would be a day well spent.
Beautiful Beaches
Calahonda is the longest of the beaches, and here you’ll find plenty of beach bars and restaurants to enjoy a snack or a beverage as well as a few quieter corners where you can sunbathe in peace.
Playa La Cala de Mijas is another beach with a good array of bars and restaurants nearby where tourists like to relax, although La Cala de Mijas is often described as having more of a village feel than other settlements in the area.
El Bombo is a shorter beach that curves round into a large bay, ending beside a small rocky cliff that’s an ideal spot for scuba diving or snorkelling.
Each beach has its own appeal and there are countless more in the area that are well worth a visit; explore the coastline at your leisure – in terms of beautiful beaches you’re spoilt for choice!
Nightlife
Choose from pubs, karaoke bars and a variety of themed restaurants when you’re going out at night in Mijas Costa. Bingo nights and pub-quiz evenings are often put on in smaller pubs if you fancy a few quiet drinks and some light entertainment, and, if you’re feeling lucky, why not try out the Casino of Torrequebrada? There’s a large play hall with roulette, blackjack, fruit machines and all the rest. A sophisticated restaurant within the casino entertains guests with a live pianist each night.

Sol y Relax – This beautiful beachfront property boasts a balcony overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Ocean. As the name suggests, you can kick back and relax with ease here, taking advantage of the outdoor swimming pool and spacious garden.
La Petunia – This studio apartment offers air-conditioned accommodation with a terrace that’s ideal for eating meals outdoors in the sunshine.
How to Get There
If you are flying from the UK, it is best to land in Malaga Airport, transfer by shuttle bus from here and head straight to your hotel or apartment in Mijas Costa. You can get there in less than half an hour! I would recommend pre-booking your Malaga Airport transfer before you travel – in my experience this saves you a lot of unnecessary stress and hassle.
