Discover Santa Clotilde Gardens

One of Lloret de Mar’s best kept secrets is the enchanting Santa Clotilde Gardens, a haven for nature lovers that offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the town. The gardens were commissioned by the Marquis of Roviralta, in 1919, and designed by renowned architect and landscaper Nicolás María Rubió y Tudurí.

A Renaissance Inspiration

Inspired by the Italian Renaissance and the Noucentisme movement, the botanical gardens were created as a tribute to the Marquis’s wife, Clotilde Rocamora, and have since become one of the best-loved hidden gems in Lloret de Mar. But if the Santa Clotilde Gardens look somewhat familiar, it could be because you’ve seen them on your favourite TV show! The gardens were used as the setting for House of the Dragon, the prequel to the popular HBO series Game of Thrones

A Panorama of Stunning Views

Perched atop a cliff between Cala Boadella and Fenals Beach, the gardens are backdropped by spectacular panoramic views of the Balearic Sea. The secluded cliff top location makes the gardens an ideal retreat for those looking to relax and soak up the idyllic scenery. One of the most unique features of the Santa Clotilde Gardens is the collection of neo-classical marble sculptures dotted around the grounds, perhaps most famously the Stairway of the Mermaids, designed by Catalan sculptor Maria Llimona.

Enjoy the Profusion of Nature

As well as the sculptures, the Santa Clotilde Gardens are home to a diverse variety of plant life native to the Mediterranean basin. This includes numerous poplars, lindens, pines, cypresses, and Japanese cheesewood. Rubió y Tudurí seamlessly integrated architecture with the natural world by planting ivy on the risers of the steps, so that when the staircase is observed from the bottom, it creates the visual effect of a waterfall made from leaves.

Plan a Visit to These Beautiful Gardens

From November to January, the gardens welcome visitors every day from 10am to 5pm. In February and March, the gardens are open every day from 10am to 6pm, and from April to October the gardens are open every day from 10am to 8pm. There’s a small admission fee of €6 for entry to the gardens (current March 2024) and a discounted price of €3 for students, seniors, families, and people with disabilities.

Top tip: As a final tip, we’d recommend taking a leisurely stroll through the gardens during the late afternoon when it’s less busy and you have a chance to watch the sunset.
