Scope Out the Gems of Gran Canaria

Snagged a sunny holiday deal in Gran Canaria’s Puerto Rico? ¡Estupendo! Whether you’re ready for a snooze in the sand or for the ultimate shopping spree, you’ll find that rest and relaxation are right at your fingertips. But while there’s often nothing better than getting pampered in your hotel or plopping down in the sand, why not mix things up with a bit of sightseeing?

If a change of scenery every now and then sounds like your kind of getaway, you chose wisely – it takes minimal effort to venture outside of Puerto Rico and explore Gran Canaria’s natural and cultural attractions on full- or half-day trips. For extra convenience, you’ll drive past some of the island’s best spots on our 36-minute airport transfer from Gran Canaria Airport to Puerto Rico. Why not ask your driver for some insider tips about some of the following highlights?

1. El Burrero

If you’re a fan of venturing off the beaten path, escape to El Burrero for a breath of fresh air – and for an authentic island experience! This picturesque place, which is approximately 5 kilometres south of Gran Canaria Airport, has remained largely untouched by tourism, although it boasts natural gems that’ll leave you speechless. Most importantly, Burrero Beach is arguably one of the most beautiful, but also one of the most unknown stretches of sand on the whole island. Although I hate to reveal this well-kept secret, I’ll trust that you won’t disclose it to other tourists – after all, I’m sure that you’ll want to enjoy a peaceful stroll along this 500-metre paradise!

For sunbathers who want to feel like locals, there’s nothing better than taking your towel to El Burrero for a quiet afternoon of tanning, reading and marvelling at a stunning setting. When you’re ready to stretch your legs, you can either try your hand at kite surfing, or – if you’d like to preserve your new-found tranquillity – see what local surprises the beach’s promenade has in store.

2. Vecindario

Is your credit card starting to get a bit restless while you’re out tanning? No wonder! If you’d like to take your wallet for a spin, it’ll practically leap out of your bag in Vecindario. During your transfer from Gran Canaria Airport to Puerto Rico, you won’t just pass by this city, but may even be able to impress your driver with some fun facts about it.

Although Vecindario is not situated directly on the coast and doesn’t boast a balmy beach, it is home to one of most beautiful attractions that shopaholics will ever behold. This metropolis not only sports the biggest outdoor shopping areas in all of Gran Canaria, but is also celebrated for its myriad malls.

No shoes, no shirt? No problem. Simply stroll along the famous Avenida Canarias, Vecindario’s four-kilometre shopping street, or pop into the two-storey Atlántico Shopping Centre. From your favourite designer brands to the savviest technology, you’ll find everything you’ve ever wanted – and more – in this shopping sanctuary. Make sure to leave lots of room in your suitcase for your hot bargains.

3. Castillo del Romeral

If fully immersing yourself in the local culture sounds like your cup of tea (or rum, rather), a day trip to Castillo del Romeral will do the trick. You’ll pass this quaint fishing village about halfway through our transfer from Gran Canaria Airport to Puerto Rico, and may want to pick your driver’s brain about it – after all, it’s an all-time favourite spot among the locals.

While Castillo del Romeral is known for its unique sea water pools (which are ideal for swimming) and architectural splendour, there’s one thing that you’ll find above all else here: fish, fish and more fish. Although you may think that fishing villages are no longer sustainable today, you’ll change your mind when you see this town’s fishermen, who tirelessly supply their community – and much of Gran Canaria – with some of the finest seafood you’ll ever taste.

After indulging in the village’s fresh delicacies and strolling around its old-world centre, why not further tantalise your taste buds with a shot of Carajillo? This drink, which consists of espresso and local rum, is available all over the island, but is arguably best after a scrumptious meal in Castillo del Romeral. Be careful, though – this delectable drink is stronger than you may think!

 4. Maspalomas

Although tourist-oriented spots are often not worth the hype, this premise is entirely false for Maspalomas. Although the town is very popular among tourists, it’s well worth joining the throng to explore its charming resorts of Las Burras, Águila, Playa del Inglés and San Agustín. Apart from satisfying beach bums, however, Maspalomas is also perfect for adventurous families, nature lovers and even culture enthusiasts. Whether you fancy slipping down slides in the island’s biggest and best water park, spotting rare orchids, butterflies and sea life at Palmitos Park, or learning about Gran Canaria’s pre-Hispanic origins at Mundo Aborigen, this spot’s versatile attractions have something special in store for every age group, gender and nationality. And, even better: it’s only a short drive (or bus ride) away from Puerto Rico!

5. Montaña de Arena

Lastly, we can’t talk about our route from Gran Canaria Airport to Puerto Rico without mentioning Montaña de Arena. Shortly before reaching your destination, you’ll pass by this scenic spot, whose imposing dunes and graceful kestrels are its pride and joy. Although it may sound like just another beach (but can you really visit too many?) at first glance, it’s a sandy spot with a twist: it’s a celebrated nudist beach. If Burrero Beach and Maspalomas’ resorts are too tame for you, you’ll be able to embrace Montaña de Arena’s more free-spirited and alternative vibe – oh, and work on your all-over tan!

While you can dare to go bare in this oasis of serenity, please keep in mind that photography is strictly prohibited. What’s more, be aware that there is no lifeguard on duty, and that you’ll have to dispose of your rubbish elsewhere.
