If you’re visiting Barcelona you can easily add a side trip to Santa Susanna, on the beautiful Costa Maresme, in Catalonia – a great way to enjoy another side of Spain. It’s only about 65 kilometres from Barcelona, but you may not have heard of it – so I’m here to give you some insider tips and convince you that, if you have a couple of days to spare, this is a great little place to visit.
There are plenty of things to love about this lovely seaside resort, but the top three are definitely its natural beauty, cultural interest and gorgeous beaches.
Santa Susanna’s Top Three
Nature
If getting out in nature sounds like a good way to finish your Spanish holiday, then the stunning Montnegre National Park won’t disappoint. Situated just 3km from the resort, the park encompasses a vast reserve comprising impressive mountains, natural springs, deep gorges, rolling verdant hills, and a plethora of local wildlife (like raccoons, salamanders and much more).
For avid walkers, the park provides endless opportunities to explore the stunning landscape and take in magnificent views. There are other ways of enjoying it as well – namely mountain biking and horse riding. Immersing in this spectacular natural environment allows you to get up close to the flora, fauna and birdlife – some of which is endemic to the region. Guaranteed to revive flagging holiday spirits immediately!
Culture
Positioned between Girona and Barcelona, the town is popular with tourists, but still retains a quiet, laid-back feel, and an ambience of history that’s written in its charming streets and architecture. There are plenty of churches, both old and not so old, and all play an important role in the region’s religious history. The Chapel of Santa Susanna, the original town’s main church, has been restored after many years in decay, while the Chapel of Sant Crist de Balasch has a fascinating heritage as a site where travelling pilgrims would stop and pray for safe passage. The more modern chapel of Sant Isidre is also worth a visit.
One of the most visible and important vestiges of Catalan history here is the watchtowers, which were built by locals in response to the pirate raids that occurred between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries.
Beaches
It’s hard not to be impressed by the local beaches: long stretches of golden sand lapped by the warm, calm waters of the Mediterranean. There are three that serve the resort:
Playa de Llevant – Stretching for 800m, this popular beach is set against the backdrop of the lovely town (it’s located right in front of the promenade) and has been officially recognised with an international tourism sustainability certificate.
Playa de las Caletes – Also located in front of the promenade, this smaller beach (about 400m long) is defined by its numerous rocky coves. It’s a great place to come for a bit of tranquillity.
Playa de las Dunas – Located in the Marine Resort there are plenty of watersports available on this 1,000m stretch of sand. It’s also home to a mini beach club, making it a favourite with families.
