Relax and Enjoy C’an Picafort’s Top Two

C’an Picafort, a former fishing village on the northern coast of Mallorca, is now a vibrant seaside resort, popular with visitors from all over Spain, Europ and the world. It has all the prerequisites of a picture postcard destination: long white beaches, turquoise waters, delicious cuisine, superb accommodation, and a buzzing, friendly ambience that’s hard to match.

Even though nowadays it’s decidedly more modern and developed, it has a storied past dating back to the Bronze Age, and a stunning setting set along the Bay of Alcudia – so there’s plenty of culture and nature to delve into if you’re looking for something more to add into an itinerary that includes a lot of time lying on the beach!

C’an Picafort’s Top Two

There’s a lot to love about this bustling little resort and it’s quite difficult to choose the “best” things; however, let’s just say that if you’re planning on visiting C’an Picafort, the following two stand out as obvious contenders to sit front and centre on your radar.

Playa de C’an Picafort

It’s no surprise that the beach is the top attraction in a beach resort! This beach really is something special, though. Its coveted Blue Flag status means it’s safe, clean, well-facilitated, and undeniably picturesque. At 1,300m long and 30m wide, the gorgeous white, sandy stretch cuts quite a dazzling image nestled into the middle of Alcudia Bay. When you’re in the ocean, turn back toward the shore and you’ll enjoy the gorgeous backdrop of mountains, which flank the town. Its geography means that not only do you have the immediate area to enjoy, but you also have access to another nine kilometres of pristine shoreline.

Aside from just lying back and soaking up those rays, this beach is a great place to try your hand at watersports in a relatively protected environment. So if you’ve ever wanted to paddle board, kayak, jet-ski, or snorkel, this is definitely the place to dip your toes.

Facilities include toilets, lifeguards, showers, sunbed and parasol hire, and first aid services.

Top tip: Playa C’an Picafort can get quite busy during the summer months, so if you want to escape somewhere a little quieter, head for nearby Playa de Muro or Playa de Son Real.

S’Albufera Nature Park

This lush reserve is heaving with life and is internationally renowned as one of the best bird watching sites not only in Europe, but the world. S’Albufera is the largest wetland area in the Balearics, sprawling over a vast 2,036 hectares. Up to 300 species of birds make this fascinating region their home, which equates to two thirds of the total local species that inhabit the Balearics.

The park lies between Port Alcudia and C’an Picafort, putting it about a 20-minute cycle along a dedicated bike track from the resort. Once inside the park, there is a network of very well-marked trails and cycle tracks, as well as numerous bird watching hides, so you can explore at your leisure.

Birdwatchers come from all over the world to spot species that include hoopoes, Peregrines, herons, avocets, egrets, osprey and many others. But even if you’re not an avid twitcher, simply walking or cycling through the stunning natural surroundings is one of the most relaxing and memorable things you can do for a few hours. Along the paths are well-curated information boards about the local flora and fauna you may encounter, as well as some of the history of the region.

Bonus Tip: History lovers should not miss a visit to the Necropolis of Son Real, which is home to more than 100 tombs dating back to the 7th century BCE. It’s a truly fascinating site overlooking the ocean, with a backdrop of sand dunes and pine trees.
