Prepare to be Charmed: 24 Hours in Nikiti

Most of us would admit to being on a constant search for the ideal holiday destination: one that can fulfil the guilty pleasure of lazing around on a beach delightfully doing “nothing”, but that can also satisfy our need to discover the history and culture of a place. Greece probably comes as close as anywhere in the world to delivering on the promise of this kind of perfection – steeped in the most ancient of history at every turn and, at the same time, blessed with some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in the world.

There is so much to be discovered in Greece, with the gorgeous region of Halkidiki a perennial favourite with tourists from all over Europe, and the world. Zeroing in even more on a location to recommend, the charming village of Nikiti has gained popularity in recent times – not just as a lovely beach resort, but also because it has cultural substance in terms of its well-preserved Old Town.

Spend a Day in the Old Town of Nikiti

If you’re visiting the region as part of a wider Grecian getaway, stop off for 24 hours in Nikiti and discover the charm and character of the Old Town (oh, but don’t forget to test out the beach afterwards!).

Mysterious Origins

Not a lot is known about the origins of the original settlement, which is set slightly inland from the coast as was the practice in medieval times (for protection from pirates), but it’s generally thought it may have been a monastic community under Byzantine rule. The new part of the town gradually migrated as it grew, to be closer to the sea, but it is still a very easy 10-minute walk between the two.

 Admire the Traditional Houses

Today, it’s wonderful to take a leisurely stroll around the narrow, cobbled streets of the Old Town to take in the restored traditional Macedonian stone houses, with their romantic flower-strewn balconies and internal courtyards. It’s easy to imagine time has stood still in this part of the town, when compared to the lively, bustling beach resort that’s just minutes away.

Visit the Folklore Museum

Set within an old stone school building, the Folklore Museum is home to an impressive collection of around 1,500 archival items of historical interest (including video testimonials), many of which have been donated by local resident families. The displays offer an interesting and in-depth insight into the stories and lives of the people of the original settlement through to modern times.

Take in Agios Nikitas Church

On top of a small hill behind the museum above is the Orthodox Church of Agios Nikitas, which dates back to 1867. It sits on the original site of a fortress used by Turkish soldiers and was built by the locals as the first and only religious building in the area. As well as its historical and cultural presence, it’s also a great place to take in beautiful elevated views over the town.

Watch the World Go By

You’ll see plenty of other nods to history as you wander around the Old Town, and it really does have a very evocative ambience that’s more evident the longer you spend there. Once you’ve seen all there is to see, finish off with a convivial drink in one of the tavernas in the Old Town’s captivating central square, which is shaded by the stretching branches of a wonderful ancient maple. It’s the perfect place to contemplate this place to remember for all the right reasons…
