Out and About with the Kids in Nerja

Everybody knows that Spain is a popular holiday destination for families, but few adventure-loving holidaymakers have ever thought to venture to Nerja. This beautiful, former fishing village has plenty on offer for youngsters and adults alike, including 16 kilometres of gorgeous sandy beach.

Read on to learn more about the out-and-about adventures you and the kids could get up to on your next Nerja getaway.

On the Water

With so much sea and sand right at your fingertips, it’s impossible to resist the variety of activities available on the water.

Besides paddling and swimming, there’s a whole host of water sports to be enjoyed around the area – though some are more suited to older children and adults.

Kayaking

If you want to test your balance (and arm strength), hire a kayak from one of the local providers and head out on an adventure with a small group. Believe me, it’s more difficult than it looks, so be prepared to capsize into the water!

Jet skiing

This activity is certainly not for the faint-hearted, so perhaps give it a miss if your children are under the age of 12. Be wary that some companies have a minimum age limit of 16. I would advise taking it slow at first, and gradually speed up as you build your confidence. Once you’re racing over the water and splashing through the waves, you’ll feel completely unstoppable.

Pedalos

A pedalo is a great option if you’re looking to enjoy a relaxing excursion out on the water. Some boats even come with slides attached, which make great additions if you’re bringing the children along.

Snorkel and Scuba

If you love sea life, a snorkelling or scuba diving excursion will be your idea of a perfect day out. Though scuba diving will have an age restriction, a snorkel can be used by anyone once they’ve got the hang of it, so even the little ones will be able to spot some fish down below.

Banana Boat

A banana boat trip is a fantastic experience for the whole family (providing the children are old enough). You’ll be taken out to sea on a long, inflatable banana attached to a speed boat which will perform a series of sharp turns until you all fall off into the water. Half the fun is trying to get back on the banana from the sea!

On Dry Land

If you aren’t a fan of getting wet, fear not – there’s plenty to do on dry land in Nerja, too.

Jeep and Buggy Tours

Explore the beautiful Spanish countryside on a jeep or buggy excursion. These experiences are great for young kids who aren’t afraid of travelling at speed, and older kids are always keen to take the wheel. The whole family can enjoy Nerja’s scenery in an entirely new way.

Horseback Riding

This is a popular activity for all holidaymakers in the area, and is especially enjoyable when the weather is fine. Trot around the countryside with your personal guide and take in Spain’s natural beauty.

Botanical Gardens

Nature lovers will delight in a visit to the Botanical Gardens. The gardens have recently been renovated and now occupy around 26,000 square metres, so there is more than enough to see. Young children especially will enjoy the bright colours and unusual shapes of some of the flora species.

Where to Stay

Hostal Alegre – The kids are sure to love this hotel since it features a large outdoor swimming pool, flat-screen TVs in every room and is located less than a mile from Burriana Beach. Rooms are light, airy and beautifully decorated, with ample space for families and facilities for younger children.

Mena Plaza – If you want to stay closer to all the action, this is the hotel for you. It’s situated right next to Balcón de Europa (one of Nerja’s best viewing points) and is just a short walk from the beach. As you can imagine, the views are incredible from the hotel rooms. Enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast each morning before heading out to explore the town.
