Perched on the rugged coastline of south-eastern Spain just above Benidorm, Albir is an oasis of comfort and relaxation topped off with the great weather and laid-back lifestyle of the Mediterranean. What was once nothing but beaches and orange groves has now become a paradise destination for travellers who are looking to slow down and indulge in the art of doing nothing. If you’re looking to break up your day lounging in the sun, a round of golf or a wander through the weekly market won’t go amiss.
The small coastal town attracts visitors and expats from all over the world, creating a friendly community of various nationalities. It’s this cosmopolitan air that makes it such an easy destination for those looking to unwind and soak up the sun. The town is unsurprisingly well-equipped for tourists, and the beach isn’t bad either! So, if you’re looking for a holiday destination that offers ease with a touch of the exotic, Albir is perfect for you. Here are a few of my favourite things to do when visiting.
Shop ‘Til You Drop
If you find yourself looking to enjoy a little retail therapy during your stay, Albir has got you covered. Thanks to the melting pot of cultures that defines the town, you’ll find a delightful array of retail businesses from which to choose. As well as local stores, there are also a great selection of upmarket shops selling top designer products, from handbags and shoes to jewellery and home furnishings.
It’s important to keep in mind that while there are a few places that stay open all day, most shops will keep to Spanish hours. So it’s more like ‘shop ’til you siesta’.
Top Tip: Keep an eye out for the ‘rebajas’ (sales) which run in mid-January and July. There are also two fantastic charity shops in the main town where you’re guaranteed to find a bargain!
Market Meandering
Whether you’re staying for a couple of weeks or a few days, a trip to the local markets is a great way to get a sense of a place. Here are two wonderful ones that always make for a lovely afternoon.
Sunday Market
This is one of my favourite ways to round off the weekend. Get up early and make your way to the popular Sunday Market, where you’ll find enticing fresh produce and blooming flowers. Mingle with locals and visitors through the stalls bursting with wares (you’ll find everything from bikinis to fresh bread here) and then head to a cafe for a mid-morning coffee and pastry.
Top Tip: Gather a selection of fresh cheeses, olives, salads, deli meats and fresh bread to take home and enjoy for lunch on your terrace, Spanish style.
Summer Evening Craft Market
There’s no better way to end the day than an evening stroll along the promenade. As you approach the start of the walkway, near the anchor, twinkling fairy lights and the quiet hubbub of passersby indicate the start of the evening craft market held throughout the summer months. This small but interesting collection of stalls offers fragrant handmade soaps, candles and other sorts of crafts. It’s the perfect place to find a souvenir and a few gifts for friends and family back home.
Hit the Greens
Spain is well-known for its golf courses and it’s become a popular destination for enthusiasts who are looking to get on the greens while working on their tan. If you’re a keen golfer and are looking to practice your drive, you’ll want to spend a few hours at the local driving range. Shared with a beautiful cricket club, this local fairway boasts stunning views of the mountains beyond and their nearby shop has everything an aspiring golfer might need.
Local Bites
While it’s nice to have the option of cooking at home, being on holiday means you can indulge in the luxury of having someone else make your dinner (and do the washing up!) Thanks to the multicultural nature of the community, the town caters to pretty much every palate, so if you find yourself yearning for the taste of home, you’ll probably be able to find it.
However, it’s also a great opportunity to get adventurous and treat your taste buds to the exciting flavours of Nepalese curries, Spanish seafood and even Argentinian grills. Better yet, eateries are extremely varied when it comes to price, so you can choose when and where to splash out.
Top Tip: Pubs and cafes are great social hubs for meeting people from all over the world. Grab a drink with a neighbour and make a new friend!
