Ölüdeniz, which translates as Dead Sea, because of its calmness, even when stormy weather is around, is a ‘must see’ beach resort on the south western coast of Turkey.
It is a perfect summer break for those desperate to get away from it all. Whether it is the hustle and bustle of your daily life, or the inclement weather back home, there are a multitude of reasons for you to visit this delightful part of the world.
What to do in Ölüdeniz
Paragliding
Ölüdeniz is well known for its possibilities to paraglide. It has truly amazing panoramic views that are a joy to behold as you glide down.
This surprisingly tranquil experience, once you have taken flight, can be set against the backdrop of Mount Babadag and is becoming increasingly popular.
You can do this as either a tandem or a solo flight, depending on your level of experience, and there are a number of different options to choose from as you embark on this incredible adventure.
Scuba Diving
Diving is also an extremely popular pastime whilst in this part of the world. Ölüdeniz has crystal clear waters that will glisten from the sunshine on the surface and provide excellent viewing opportunities below as the clarity remains even when you reach the depths of the ocean.
There are a variety of local diving companies more than willing to assist you in your search for the perfect dive.
If you are new to the activity and wish to try something a little easier, why not check out the snorkelling here instead. Maybe you can even do this as a precursor to your first dive.
The sea-life available to view will take your breath away and ensure that this is something that you will never forget.
What to see in Ölüdeniz
Beaches
Needless to say, the number one attraction in, or nearby, Ölüdeniz is the beaches.
Around the bay of Ölüdeniz there are a host of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, all befitting of one of Turkey’s finest beach resorts.
The sandy beach and the clear blue water will ensure that this place will remain long in the memory.
For a bit of a change, you may want to venture out a bit, just two kilometres mind you, to the beach of Kidrak, aka Paradise Beach.
In fact, it makes a nice walk from Ölüdeniz and is a much quieter beach than its more illustrious neighbour.
Alternatively, why not head for Butterfly Beach, which can only be accessed by boat from Ölüdeniz.
This beach has a restaurant to enjoy and the valley has fantastic nature to make this a truly secluded place to go to, away from the hub of Ölüdeniz.
Kayaköy (Levissi): an abandoned village
If you are looking for a cultural thing to do whilst in Ölüdeniz then why not try a visit to Kayaköy, also known as Levissi, where you will find the ruins of an ancient village.
The two churches, Kataponagia and Taxiarkis, are of particular notoriety, not least as they are the structures most intact.
Fethiye Museum
A little further afield, just under 10 kilometres from downtown Ölüdeniz, you will discover the museum of Fethiye. Here you will find pottery, jewellery and small statuary or votive stones from the ancient settlements of Tlos and Kaunos.
Some of the exhibits on show date back to almost 400BC and have been used to help decipher the Lycian language. Lycia was a region in Anatolia and known to history since the records of ancient Egypt.
The museum is surrounded by a garden which boasts numerous Lycian sarcophagi and Roman artefacts, many of which demonstrate early Christian symbols, such as angels.
Where to stay
Low cost
The Green Valley Hotel, within a stone’s throw of the town centre, offers the best value for money option in Ölüdeniz, with a weekend stay often coming out at less than €50 per night.
The hotel offers the basic necessities, including free parking and a restaurant, but it also includes mountain views, as well as some rooms having a balcony.
In addition, whilst you are here ensure you make the most of the swimming pool, barbecue and bar facilities.
Mid Range
For something a little more up market, yet will not burn a hole in your pocket, try the Unsal Hotel.
This hotel comes highly recommended, despite being a couple of kilometres from downtown Ölüdeniz.
In fact, the beach of Belcekiz is just a two minute walk away.
It offers all the amenities you would expect (Wi-Fi, private balconies, outdoor swimming pool, 24 hour reception), with the added bonus of having a modern interior design, fitted with marvellous wooden furniture.
Luxury
If you are seeking comfort, as well as style, and money is less of a concern, then look no further than the Oyster Residences for the best accommodation in Ölüdeniz.
With an average score of 85% from reviewers, this place lies just 150 metres from the aforementioned Belcekiz Beach.
Indeed, it is its location which guests remember most. The relaxing atmosphere created by the nearby shoreline helps make the place a ‘must stay’ when visiting this part of Turkey.
The joys do not end there. It is set in a traditional Fethiye stone house with olive trees all around and the photographs you may have seen do not do it justice.
Furthermore, some of the rooms have private terraces which are excellently furnished.
Guests are welcomed by friendly staff who are happy to serve you at the Oyster Restaurant or in the drink lounge as you savour the ambience from this stunning spot.
