There are various ways to travel from the heart of Innsbruck to its nearby Alpine terrain, but the most interesting one is certainly the Nordkette cable car. Departing not far from the world-famous Goldenes Dachl, this funicular will take you from a bustling, lively city into the muffled and peaceful beauty of the snowy mountains. The view down below of the city you just left is stunning, but the landscapes around you are even more magnificent.
Between Innsbruck and the top of the Seegrube mountains is Nordkette, an in-between level. Here you can find Europe’s highest zoo, which has over 2000 animals, as well as a number of good restaurants and bars. Since you have to switch cable cars a couple of times to reach the funicular’s highest altitude, those afraid of heights should not stand back: simply hop off on one of the middle levels. If, however, you want to see the greatest view of your surroundings, carry on to the top!
