Those who appreciate the finer things in life may struggle to find a ski resort that caters to their needs, but not if they book a stay at the wonderful Austrian resort of Mayrhofen. Located in the stunning province of Tyrol, Mayrhofen is a versatile place with a wonderful, rustic charm, which extends to its gastronomic galore. The picturesque village is filled with inviting and traditional eateries, drinking establishments and shops, providing its visitors with an authentic – and unforgettably delicious – Tyrolean experience.

The food in Mayrhofen is a key selling factor, and there are a handful of upscale eateries to choose from. Let’s take a look at my favourites!
Gasthof Perauer
This cosy hotel and restaurant has everything you need for an unforgettable dining experience. The interior is completely wooden, which creates a homey feel, and your stomach is sure to start rumbling as the smell of frying steak fills the air.
In addition to the rustic setting, Gasthof Perauer is known for its tantalising cuisine, which places a heavy focus on meat – the homemade bacon and steaks are a must! The restaurant also has an extensive wine selection, as well as a range of regional cheeses that are the perfect post-meal snack. After this, I highly recommend stopping off for a nightcap at the stylish hotel bar.
Granatalm
Granatalm is found at the top of the second stage of the Finkenberg gondola, 2095 metres above sea level. This allows for incredible views from the large terrace, so don’t forget your camera!
Inside the hut, it is cosy and warm, and you can expect exceptional service. Barbecue is done right here, so expect plenty of smoky meat in a casual yet upmarket atmosphere.
Granatalm also has a lengthy wine list, so be sure to pick one that complements your meal, and then sit back and soak up the atmosphere. There are many great dishes here, but I think that the barbecued chicken is the best.
Schneekar
Atop the Schneekar chair, Schneekar exudes elegance and luxury. Here, you can enjoy fine dining on top the world. If the weather permits, you can sit outside on the large terrace and enjoy the views, but many prefer to sit inside, as you can warm up by the open fires. The food is hearty and healthy, and all ingredients are obtained from local farms and suppliers. It may be somewhat expensive, but trust me: the atmosphere and the food are experiences that are worth paying for.
Schneekar also boasts one of the highest-lying wine cellars, and a wine sommelier will help you select a bottle that perfectly complements your meal.
Hotel Kramerwirt
Hotel Kramerwirt is a fantastic place to eat, as you’ll have the unique benefit of choosing from eight different dining areas. This includes traditional and rustic areas, open lounges and lavish settings that are ideal for a romantic meal or celebration. There is also a pretty little garden, where you can dine on warmer days.
The atmospheric variety spreads over into the hotel’s menu, as it serves both local specialities and a range of international classics. The hotel even makes its own cream, ice cream, yoghurt and butter with ingredients from its own farm. What’s more, the well-stocked cellar has a selection of fine wines to choose from, which are sure to tantalise your taste buds.
Wirtshaus zum Griene
(Arguably) Mayrhofen’s oldest restaurant, Wirtshaus zum Griene is a charming 400-year-old chalet set in high pastures. This makes it a wonderful hideaway when you get too cold, because you can huddle around the fire and indulge in hearty food and fine wine. There are a range of delicious dishes on offer, such as roast pork with potato dumplings (Schweinebraten), which are worth writing home about.
How to Get There
To reach Mayrhofen, you will want to fly from a London airport into Innsbruck Airport (INN). This should take under two hours, but you may face a short layover in Vienna. The flight is made regularly by Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa.
Pre-book a Shuttle Direct transfer from Innsbruck, and we can get you to the resort in around an hour, giving you the chance to enjoy the views and begin planning which restaurant to visit first.
