Although it might seem to attract more of a younger crowd, Lisbon is full of family-friendly attractions and activities. Bursting with colour, charming locals and fabulous food, this small coastal city is guaranteed to please mum, dad and all the kids.

Heading On Up
You can’t visit Lisbon without taking a ride on one of the city’s iconic trams. Built across seven hills and paved with beautiful (although slightly cumbersome) cobblestones, navigating the tiny streets is made much easier thanks to this old-school transport system.
Experience authentic Lisbon travel by catching the Ascensor da Gloria Funicular up the steep gradient to the pretty Chiado area. From there, sightseeing is easy with the many public and tourist trams in service. Little ones especially will love catching a ride in these funny little trains.
Sights in Style
Why not soak up the cultural highlights with a guided tour? These are not only fun for the kids, but will also give you the chance to learn about Lisbon’s fascinating cultural and architectural history.
Sit back and enjoy the breeze as you whizz through bustling neighbourhoods covered in the recognisable blue and white tiles. Favourite spots include the trendy Chiado region and the Alfama district made up of maze-like streets and enticing local restaurants.
Snap Some Street Art
As you’ve seen so far, Lisbon is well-known for its colour and creativity. Ever since the City Hall legalised street art, the community has just exploded in a cloud of colourful expression, much to the delight of residents and visitors.
Although you can easily wander the streets yourself, to find the best pieces of art I would highly recommend taking a guided street art tour. You’ll be taken all the hot spots including the incredible Quinto Do Mocho. This dilapidated housing estate turned outdoor art gallery is one of the largest in the world, complete with 69 huge murals covering the towering buildings. Snap some photos of the whole family and make those memories last forever.
Eating and Drinking
With all the walking, talking and exploring, tummies are sure to start rumbling soon. But don’t worry, there’s a wonderful variety of food on offer throughout the city, whether you’re looking to treat yourselves to fresh seafood and a cocktail or delight in something a little more authentic and down-to-earth.
- Aim Sky High – The Sky Bar and Cervejaria Liverdade is the perfect place for a family treat and my favourite rooftop bar and restaurant in Lisbon. Serving up fresh cocktails and mocktails with breath-taking panoramic views, the modern social hub offers a change of scenery among the historic buildings surrounding it.
After sipping your refreshing sundowners, head to the ground floor restaurant that offers the perfect mix of laid-back vibes and sophistication. Here, seafood takes centre stage and you can feast of fresh fish or handmade sushi.
- The Time Out Market – This is perfect for families of all palate types. A food market that serves up modern, gourmet food in a casual setting, there is sure to be something for everyone here. There’s one thing that’s guaranteed though: it’s all delicious!
Shop ‘Til You Drop
- A Vida Portugues – While you’ll find markets and stalls on most streets, this place is a treasure trove of traditional products. Located in a former perfume factory, you’ll find everything from pretty ceramics to stationery and toys. Why not look for a souvenir to remember your fantastic holiday?
