History buffs are going to be in their element when they visit this fabulous city in southern Spain. Malaga is bursting at the seams with historical accolades, and you can sightsee during the day and enjoy the laidback Spanish atmosphere by night.
Here I have detailed some of my favourite places to explore when on a history-focussed trip to this fascinating city.
Alcazaba
Despite its tourist-based popularity when it comes to sights in the city, this fortress palace is definitely worth a visit. Dating from the Muslim period of occupation in Malaga (built between 1057 and 1063), the building is connected to the Arab defence works by a walled passage known as the Coracha.
Combining Roman, Arab and Renaissance features, a visit here offers the chance to take in a whole host of history that is housed in a blanket of beautiful characteristics. Gardens and pools, patios and manicured green spaces give way to some stunning rooms that were cleverly designed to make the infiltrating light cast another level of beauty throughout. On top of the stunning aesthetic, the military components are also impressive.
Castillo de Gibralfaro
This fourteenth-century castle, built originally to protect the Alcazaba, is a wonderful place to head to if you enjoy great views. The walls still stand proud and are now the most popular viewing point in the city. Once considered the strongest fortress on the Iberian Peninsula, its double walls and eight towers are prominent features. Linked to the Alcazaba Castle by the Coracha, the castle has two main parts: the main upper courtyard that is home to the Interpretation Centre (offering lots of fascinating information about the site) and the lower courtyard that was once the troop barracks and stables.
Top Tip: Discover the Phoenician Well and Baths in the upper courtyard.
Catedral Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion
This cathedral is iconic, not only because it is a place of religious accolade but also because it is a national landmark. I just love the abundance of Spanish religious artistic features that decorate the walls and complement the Renaissance architectural influences perfectly.
The naves, the apse and the choir are all masterpieces in themselves and the two organs, with their 4000 pipes, are still used to perform in concerts today.
Top Tip: The Museo Catedralicio (Cathedral Museum) inside the cathedral is worth a look.
Museo Picasso Malaga
You can’t come to Malaga and miss this museum that celebrates the life of Picasso, who was born in the city. Displaying an incredible overview of his work, the museum was 50 years in the planning. The wife of Picasso’s eldest son and Picasso’s grandson donated several works to the collection that spans the artist’s magnificent career.
Top Highlight:The painting of Picasso’s sister, Lola, which he did when he was only 13 years old!
Where to Stay
Mariposa Hotel Malaga – This has got to be my favourite spot to pitch up when I am in Malaga. The colourful rooms and modern arty touches make it a welcoming place to get back to after a long day exploring. I love the 15-minute walk into town that takes you past lots of traditional tapas bars and cafes, and many of the main sites are also within an easy stroll.
The rooftop bar is a great addition – indulge in a pre-dinner beverage and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere. Staff here will make your stay a truly unforgettable experience.
