Agios Nikolaos

Tranquil Agios Nikolaos: A Family Guide to Crete

Crete has long been an ideal holiday destination for parents in search of some relaxed family fun. Thanks to its clear, crystal shorelines and whitewashed beaches, I’ve always enjoyed visiting this beautiful destination with my kids. But in recent years, when I tell people about idyllic holidays spent in Crete, they often look at me in horror because they assume that the whole of the island has been taken over by party-goers in resorts like Chersonissos and Malia. The fact that for every party resort there is another which is quiet and tranquil, like the beautiful Hersonissos, seems to have

Family Fun in Hersonissos

Organising a summer holiday is stressful enough when you’re planning for yourself and your significant other. But arranging a getaway for 2 sounds blissfully easy after you’ve had children! Since your youngsters are bound to get restless while you’re trying to take a much-needed siesta in the sand, it’s important to have plenty of active and fun-filled activities at the ready. Let me tell you about some of my favourite family-friendly spots in and around Hersonissos: an idyllic beach town situated on the northern coast of Crete. Visiting Crete without the kids? Just Dance: Kardamena’s Coolest Clubs for a Boys’ Night Out

Want to escape the grind of everyday chores? Looking to let everything go for a few nights? Sounds like it’s time for a clubbing holiday with your best bros! If you’re ready to bust out some slick dance moves and get your drink on, there’s no party scene that quite compares to the craziness of Kardamena’s. Located on the charming Greek island of Kos, this sunny holiday destination is an oasis of tranquillity during the day. But don’t be fooled: once the moon casts its silver light over the streets of Kardamena, the clubs’ booming music, cheap shots, and boisterous

Kavos: A Guide to Corfu’s Party Capital

So you’re going on holiday to Kavos on Greece’s island of Corfu: you’ve packed your towel and suntan lotion, your best party shirt and dancing trainers and you’re ready to go. But have you thought about what you’re actually going to do when you get there? The party holiday of a lifetime is going to take a little bit of planning if you want to be sure of hitting the best clubs on the best nights, soaking up the sun on the best beaches and getting your grub at the best (and cheapest) places to eat. Make Memories (and Lose Them Again) on a Lad’s Trip to Malia

Planning a lads’ holiday with your mates? There’s no better place than Crete’s party capital. Malia is a very popular holiday destination among British lads – and you will see why! Malia, a coastal town in Crete, Greece, is one of Europe’s biggest party scenes. A bustling beach town by day, it transforms into a clubber’s paradise at night. There are loads of great value eateries to enjoy and dozens of cheap bars to get drunk in. Malia also offers some top-class clubs. Don’t miss any of the ‘it’ places. Here are a few tips on where to go to

Zante for Clubbers

It’s that time of year again so assemble the troops, inform your significant others and start planning for a week of mayhem on the ultimate lads’ holiday. There are loads of great options, but this year I reckon that Zante (Zakynthos) is the place to be – particularly if the boys like clubbing!

Zante is a Greek island which is bursting at the seams with lively bars, cool clubs and amazing beaches (the weather is scorching in the summer, so remember your sun cream!). It is, essentially, a party island and each summer it attracts hoards of party animals looking to enjoy themselves to the max and soak up plenty of sun.

One of my favourite things about this great island is the fact that everything quite close together. This means that you are always in the thick of it and there is a cracking atmosphere throughout the island.

Read our guide to non-booze related activities in Zante here!

You really are spoilt for choice when it comes to places to let loose, but here are a few of Zante’s highlights and places that the lads will love.

Zakynthos Shore Excursions

Zakynthos (or Zante) lies 20km off the south-west coast of Greece amongst the Ionian Islands, a group which also includes Corfu, Kefalonia, Paxos, Lefkas and Ithaca. The devastating earthquakes which hit the southern Ionian Islands in 1953 caused the death of around 600 residents and destroyed most of the infrastructure on Zakynthos and neighbouring Kefalonia. The majority of those who survived emigrated to the Greek mainland or to other countries leaving a small population to rebuild their islands.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki Shore Excursions

Located 500km north of Athens, Thessaloniki is the capital of Greek Macedonia and Greece’s second-largest city. Founded as far back as 315BC and named after Alexander The Great’s sister, Thessaloniki is a relatively new stop on the cruise circuit which is destined to grow in popularity as word of its attractions gets out. The city is packed with historical sights and offers a wealth of cultural activities which allow for an outstanding day in port before you head off to discover more gems in the eastern Mediterranean.

Santorini

Santorini Shore Excursions

Located in the Cyclades group of islands in the southern Aegean Sea, the Greek island of Santorini is what remains following an enormous volcanic eruption which took place around 1600BC. For centuries scholars have theorised as to the Greek philosopher Plato’s inspiration for the lost continent of Atlantis referred to in his works Timaeus and Critias. One of the most plausible theories is that Atlantis refers to the destruction of the Minoan culture on the island of Crete due to a tsunami resulting from this very eruption. Other academics have suggested a link between the biblical reference to the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and the Minoan eruption.

Samos

Samos Shore Excursions

Lying in the eastern Aegean Sea just 1.6km off the Turkish mainland is the mountainous Greek Island of Samos. It has long been known for producing a sweet dessert wine from the Muscat grape which is cultivated in the vineyards located on the slopes of Mount Ampelos. Production dates back as far as 1200BC. The island’s other main claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of Pythagoras whose theorem about the angles of triangles continues to baffle young Mathematics students to this day.

Rhodos

Rhodes Shore Excursions

Located in the Aegean Sea, just 18km from the coast of Turkey, the Greek island of Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands. Most of the island’s population lives in the town of Rhodes which is where most ferries and cruise ships arrive.

Lesbos

Lesvos Shore Excursions

In recent times the number of cruise ships docking in Mytilini, the capital of Lesvos (Lesbos) in the Aegean Sea, has fallen significantly as the island has found itself at the forefront of Europe’s refugee crisis. Lying just 3.6km across the Mytilini Strait from Turkey, this Greek Island of less than 90,000 inhabitants saw the arrival of more than half a million refugees from such war-torn countries as Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. Whilst many never survived the sea crossing others continued their journey north in the hope of a better life in Germany, Sweden or the UK.

Kos

Kos Shore Excursions

The Greek island of Kos is best known as the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of western medicine. It was here that the ancient physician learned his trade and wrote the Hippocratic Oath which is still sworn by newly qualified doctors to this day. The main excursion for cruise ship passengers arriving in Kos Town is to the nearby Asklepion Temple where Hippocrates studied and taught as well as founding its renowned Medical School.
