If you’re looking for somewhere a little different to take the kids, why not head to the French Alps? For families, I can particularly recommend the beautiful ski destination of Flaine in the Haute Savoie region. This charming area has much more to offer than its various ski slopes, so if skiing isn’t your forte you’ll have no need to worry. Read on to find out what else you and the youngsters could get up to in Flaine.
Trying Out the Slopes
You don’t know until you try! Even if the whole family are skiing novices, you’re likely to regret it if you don’t give it a go. There are a number of ski schools to choose from, though bear in mind that most cater mainly to younger children. Ice Quad Biking
This is sure to give you an adrenaline rush! Book any day of the week to enjoy Flaine’s 700m-long track designed specifically for the biking experiences. Speed around the circuit and feel the chilly air on your face as you go – it’s completely thrilling, and the kids love it too. In the centre of the track you’ll find a hut selling snacks and refreshments, so this is a great way to spend an afternoon.

Dog Sledding
This is definitely an activity you’ll struggle to find elsewhere, and will no doubt make it into the memory book. This immersive family experience run by Evasion Nordique is a fantastic way to learn something new together and get in touch with nature. With a standard dog-sledding package, you and the youngsters can enjoy learning the basics about driving a sled lead by three to four huskies while enjoying the stunning scenery along the route.

Snowmobiling
This is said to be one of the most fun activities in the area, and I for one can vouch for it. Once the ski lifts rest for the night, you’re free to hurtle down the empty slopes on these powerful vehicles and feel the bite of the air as you rip through the snowy landscape. There really is nothing quite like it.

Flaine has a specious leisure complex offering a 25m swimming pool, children’s pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room. However, if you want to stay near your accommodation, a lot of properties around the area have their own swimming pools. There are also several spa facilities in the area if you’re looking to indulge in some self-care.
Culture Centre
Once the thrills of the resort have got the better of you, you’re likely to want a day of peace and quiet. The Culture Centre in Flaine Forum is the perfect place to chill out and enjoy something a little less action-packed than slope-based activities. Enjoy the art gallery, library and reading room – bask in the silence while it lasts!

How to Get There
If you’re travelling from the UK, you’re best flying into Geneva Airport. You’ll have no trouble choosing suitable flight times since there are approximately 182 scheduled flights each week. The journey usually takes around an hour and a half, and four airlines fly direct which is also handy!
After landing I would recommend getting a pre-booked shuttle transfer to your destination. The transfer to Flaine usually takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes – plenty of time for the little ones to have a power nap if they need it. A shuttle transfer will also mean no annoying queues at the airport, allowing you to get your holiday started almost immediately.
