Explore Mallorca by Bike: Our Favourite Cycling Routes

Some people love to relax when they go on holiday, lying in the sun, watching the days drift away and doing a whole lot of nothing. Planning trips like that is easy – thousands of lazy destinations are just a quick Google search away. However, if you’re someone looking to go on an active adventure, it’s a lot harder to know what to pick or where to go. Why not cycle around Mallorca?

In recent years Mallorca has become a cycling hot spot, with thousands of bicycle and nature enthusiasts from all over the world flocking to this large Balearic island. You don’t have to look very hard to see why – with its very mild winters, 300 sunny days each year and a gorgeous backdrop, it’s an appealing destination for just about anyone. However, the phenomenal and diverse terrain is what truly draws cyclists in. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, work out seven days a week or haven’t thought about the gym in seven months, there are routes fit for all fitness levels.

Those who love a challenge and a climb will head straight to the Tramuntana mountain range, while gentler, less-experienced cyclists may prefer scenic and flat coastal roads. The cycling season tends to begin in February and last through to October, with its busiest times being up until May. Due to the intense heat, the worst months to come are July and August – if you do end up visiting then, it’s recommended that you avoid exercising during the hottest part of the day, 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm, for your own safety.

Hotels and sports facilities often cater towards cyclists. Those looking to intently focus on their sport will have an array of training camps to participate in. However, if you’re just visiting for a casual holiday bike ride or two, there are lots of fun, low-pressure cycling events to choose from. If you need a break from your bike, check out the beaches or the nightlife to give you a change of pace.

Now you know why Mallorca is Cycling Central – read on to find out the route that is best for you.

Formentor Peninsula

The cycling route from Puerto Pollenca to Formentor Beach could be formidable to riders who are just beginning their cycling careers but, for those who already have some experience under their belts, this is the perfect intermediate route. Described as a moderate hill climb, the entire distance from start to finish is 21 kilometres. This is the ideal route for those who are looking for breathtaking scenery as they cruise along the coast.

Starting at the marina in Puerto Pollenca, the road conditions are smooth and easy for the majority of the journey. The first real climb can be a bit challenging for some, but there are plenty of places to take a break along the way. Riders often stop at a viewpoint called Mirador de Sa Crueta to see a rock that protrudes from the water known as ‘El Colomer’. From here on, the ride gets much easier. Although you can veer off a number of ways, the recommended route takes you on to Formentor Beach and ends at a lighthouse at Cap Formentor.

This route is recommended for those who like just enough of a challenge to make things interesting and a lot of gorgeous natural views.

Where to Stay

Aparthotel Duva & Spa is a dream come true for cyclists. This aparthotel offers secure bicycle storage facilities, a repair shop, a garage and even place to clean the bikes. Only 15 minutes away from the beach (and that’s if you’re walking – cyclists will get there much quicker!), it’s in a prime location for those looking to tackle the ride from Port Pollenca to Formentor Beach, especially as the cycling route begins at the marina.

Keep up with your exercise at the Duva’s fitness centre, pamper yourself at their spa and wellness centre, swim in one of the pools or have a friendly game of tennis on their courts. Relax by taking a walk through their well-kept gardens, having a meal at one of their top-notch restaurants or partaking in their varied entertainment programme. A stay at the Duva will give you the perfect mixture of relaxation and excitement.

Tramuntana Coastal Road

The Tramuntana Coastal Road cycling route will take you on a 115-kilometre journey from Port Pollenca to Andratx. Due to the distance and number of climbs, this route is best for someone of at least an intermediate skill level.

You’ll see both scenic nature and cute civilisation on this lovely, long ride. There are plenty of gorgeous coastal views and, despite a recent devastating forest fire, lots of natural beauty still remains. You’ll cycle through picturesque and historic villages such as Deia, Estellencs and Banyalbufar. With some tricky hills right at the very end, you’ll welcome the very last leg descending close to sea level.

This is the perfect route for cyclists who don’t mind hills and are looking for a serene and beautiful coastal ride.

Where to Stay

Friendly and welcoming, Hotel Torá is a home away from home. It’s quiet, comfortable and a great place to relax after a long cycle ride – they even have a secure place for you to park your bicycle. To help you unwind, the hotel boasts air conditioning, sea views that can be admired on terraces or through large windows, spacious reading lounges, free internet access and satellite TV.

If you’re looking for non-cycling related activities, they’ve got you covered. A golf course and tennis courts are less than two miles away, there are several walking routes nearby and a swimming pool right on site. Adventurous eaters will love their restaurant as it features an enormous array of both international and regional dishes. No one beats Hotel Torá when it comes to hospitality.

Santuari de Cura

The 63-kilometre cycle route from Port Pollenca to Santuari de Curi is often recommended for expert riders due to the number of severe climbs it features. However, it can be modified for an easier (but longer) ride if desired. Despite the steep hills, the original route is straightforward and easy to follow.

Santuari de Cura is one of Mellorca’s hidden gems. As the destination is relatively unknown, fewer cyclists are aware of this route, so the ones who choose to ride it aren’t very likely to run into anyone on their journey. The town of Santuari de Cura is atop an isolated hill and offers a gorgeous panoramic view of the entire Tramuntana mountain range – and that is definitely worth the climb.

If you want a challenging, unique and secluded ride, try this route on for size.

They offer sports magazines and telly channels, a pool and an on-site gym – you’ll have to work hard not to work out while staying here. To top it all off, they’ve even got a multitude of creature comforts, including Wi-Fi, a spa, air conditioning and a gourmet restaurant and cocktail bar.
