Explore Benidorm from a Base in Cala de Finestrat

Benidorm has been one of the world’s most famous holiday destinations since it first came to prominence more than 50 years ago, and is still incredibly popular with guests from all over the world. As it’s expanded, it’s had more and more to offer holidaymakers, from budget getaways to luxurious spa experiences. This means it’s one of the best places for a family holiday, as you can take advantage of a huge range of available activities to build the experience that’s right for you. In this post, I’ll give you some of the best ways to make your break special. My first tip? Book accommodation in the quieter Cala de Finestrat to see a different side of the area, while still staying close enough to the action to make the most of it all.

Cala de Finestrat

A Benidorm Break with a Difference

Cala de Finestrat

This smaller beach town offers the same sun, sea and sand the Alicante region is known for, but with a unique local twist.

The main seaside promenade offers everything you’d expect, including picturesque cafés and ice creameries for the kids. The best spot for a photo opportunity, though, is a little way out. Walk around the headland to take stunning shorts of the city across the water.

Markets offer a taste of culture on Tuesdays and Fridays and, if you can get the time off school, September is the perfect opportunity to see some of the local festivals; you’ll be able to hear some music, dance and enjoy some excellent homemade paella.

Finestrat

Just a 15-minute drive out of Cala is the small mountain village that gives the beach town its name. It’s worth making the journey to see just how different life is up here on the slopes of Puig Campana. The juxtaposition is best highlighted by a view out over the roofs of the colourful, Moorish-influenced buildings to the skyscrapers of the tourist city nearby.

Activities in Town

Cable Ski at Levante Beach

You won’t be surprised to know that this Mediterranean holiday hotspot is blessed with some truly world-class beaches. Sparkling blue waves lap at golden sand, with a backdrop of bustling restaurants and cafés – and you can find it without stepping foot out of Cala.

The popular Levante area offers a variety of water sports experiences at Cable Ski, just 100m off the beach. Adventurous families in the summer months can try their hands at waterskiing, wakeboarding and much more!

Thrills and Fun at Terra Mitica

Terra Mitica is one of the very best theme parks in Spain (and perhaps in all of Europe). Split into four themed regions – Iberia, Egypt, Rome and Greece – it always has a range of shows on, with everything from horses and street theatre to dances and flamenco.

However, the real attraction here is the incredible choice of rides, including:

  • The free-falling heights of the Flight of the Phoenix
  • A 120-degree angle 35m in the air on the Synkope disc
  • Spinning and tumbling on the inverted Titanide coaster
  • The breakneck 60km per hour rush of Inferno

With so much on offer, even the biggest thrill seekers will be sure to be satisfied… and not to worry if getting hurled around at high speeds doesn’t sound like your idea of fun. There are gentler experiences on offer here too, ensuring Terra Mitica caters to the whole family.

Cala’s Cuisine

While you’re here, don’t forget to check out all the excellent restaurants! Picky eaters are well catered for with plenty of places offering decent British grub. Still, you’re also encouraged to explore! My personal recommendation is to try the excellent tapas in the old town’s Calle Santo Domingo area for some truly tasty, authentic cuisine.

Where to Stay

Hotel Tropic – Guests at the Hotel Tropic get an especially wide choice of facilities, as all are welcome to use those at its sister resort, Hotel Alone, which is located opposite it. Entertainment is provided for adults and children, with shows, activities and games aplenty. Enjoy the pool and poolside bar, the panoramic views from the lifts and the quirky boat-shaped buffet restaurant.

Apartmentos Tamarindos – Close to Cala’s beach and Benidorm’s centre are the Apartmentos Tamarindos. They offer amenities including an outdoor pool, a gym and a games room with darts and a ping pong table. Notably, rooms at the Apartmentos also come with a kitchenette, living room and fully-equipped bathroom.

Each of these hotels is centrally located within Cala, with good connections to all nearby resorts and all but guaranteed great weather. All rooms are air conditioned and come with a great view, while many extras and upgrades are available.
