The Costa del Sol is one of the most visited destinations in Spain – and for good reason. The towns and villages here are pretty, drenched in sun and often within walking distance of spectacular beaches. They’re also filled with interesting and unique culture. Some people may tend to baulk at the mention of the Costa del Sol, but in truth there is everything that the cultured traveller could possibly want – starting, of course, with amazing towns like Nerja.
Nerja is one of the finest places to visit if you’re taking the trip to this part of the Iberian Peninsula – and its relative obscurity should only add to the excitement that you’ll be dipping into a part of Spain that is often overshadowed by its showy and overcrowded neighbours. Don;t worry though, this town isn’t only fantastic for those who like history and culture – it does, of course, have a fantastic beach on which to spend a few lazy days.
Below, I’ve outlined some of my favourite parts of this beautiful town, which may turn it into a ‘next destination’ for many!
The Balcón de Europa
The ‘Balcony of Europe’ is one of the main destinations that you’ll find people flocking to when they arrive in Nerja. It’s a great spot to enjoy sea views and people watch. The Balcón comes alive after nightfall and it’s also where you’ll find many events and activities taking place. It’s over 500 years old, making it a great place to go to get an authentic sense of historic Andalusia.
Cueva de Nerja
For those looking for a taste of really old Spain, look no further. These incredible caves are a few kilometres away from the main town centre, but it’s certainly well worth the walk. Once home to prehistoric hunters from the Stone Age, this is unlike anything you’d expect to find in a place so close to a tourist area. The guided tour is highly recommended.
Rio Chillar
This river winds its way for several kilometres through the stunning local landscape, and walking its banks is perhaps one of the most pleasant ways to spend a few hours in and around Nerja. You can keep an eye out for animals and lizards, as well as the changing rock formations and water features as the river twists and turns. It’s something that is well worth doing throughout the year – with plenty of places to avoid the heat of the sun if you’re there in summer.
Iglesia del Salvador
For fans of architecture, the church of Salvador is a picture postcard destination. Situated in a completely pedestrianised area – making walking here a joy – the church is a great example of a blend of building styles. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy some downtime between the beach and other cultural delights.
The Aqueduct
Recognised by the local government as a place of special significance, the Aqueduct is an interesting place to come and see how the Industrial Revolution took place in this part of Europe. It’s majestic and architecturally stunning.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Nerja is a joy to behold – there are some amazing little places that reward you for staying away from the crowded tourist traps.
Parador de Nerja is the place to stay for fantastic views of the Costa del Sol, as it is set high atop a cliff while still being only a few minutes walk to the centre. The restaurant at the hotel is a top choice for those looking for some authentic cuisine of the Andalusia region.
Los Jarales Nerja is famous for its excellent staff and the attention to detail they put into all of their guests’ stays. It’s also a good spot for those who like to explore the area on two wheels – with plenty of cycle paths nearby.
Apartamento Las Palmeras is situated centrally to Nerja, and is home to excellent amenities including those that make it a good place for any self-caterers. A glass of wine on the terrace is a phenomenal way to enjoy the sunset and the views the area has to offer.
How to Get There
Getting to Nerja is remarkably simple for how rewarding it is when you arrive. You can fly from multiple UK airports directly to Malaga Airport (AGP), which is by far the most convenient one to arrive into. It’s also the airport in the region that serves the most UK airlines. You can expect a flight time from London of about 2 hours and fifty minutes.
