On a visit, it doesn’t take long to discover what makes this stunning Baroque gem so appealing.
What to Do in Prague
Above the main city is the grand castle of Prague that is made up of Baroque churches, a royal palace, extensive courtyards and other fascinating features. It is not difficult to spend a whole day exploring the complex and marvelling at the views of the Charles Bridge that greet you from this hilltop location. The beautiful Old Town is worthy of a full day’s exploration and it is easy to lose yourself in the maze of medieval cobbled streets. This is the real heart of Prague. For a lazy afternoon, we suggest a rowing boat ride down the Vltava River, as this offers a completely different perspective on the city.
Shopping
The best place to shop in Prague is along the Charles Bridge. This 14th century construction stretches across the river and hosts street artists selling all manner of souvenirs, including pen and ink and watercolour cityscapes. This is a lovely place to come at sunset when there are fewer people and the bridge looks rather more imposing in the evening light. Some of the world’s best crystal and glass is sold in Prague and you can window shop to your heart’s content in the glittering shops of the Old Town Square.
Nightlife and Entertainment
The Marionette Theatre holds some of the most magical performances and even though they are not in English, they are still very enjoyable. The main show is ‘Don Giovanni’ by Mozart, which premiered in the city. The show appears across town on a regular occasion. The Old Town chapels often host performances too and these are inexpensive and certainly worth checking out. Alternatively, head to a show at the Smetana Hall to enjoy a real treat.
Eating Out
Eating out in Prague during the summer is very different to eating out here in winter. Winter dining is mostly enjoyed in cosy cellar pubs that throng with locals, while summer eating is often outside in street cafes or on river terraces. The city’s Bohemian ambiance is carried through into its restaurants which serve wonderful food that is reasonably priced.

The convenient tram is only a few steps away from the entrance and takes you to all the main sites of the city.
Cloister Inn Hotel – Our suggestion for mid priced accommodation is the Cloister Inn Hotel in the centre of Prague, close to Charles Bridge. Beautifully furnished rooms are air-conditioned and have free Wi-Fi, a desk and bathrooms. The breakfast that is served is included in the price. With free tea and coffee in the lobby, a laundry service and 24 hour reception this hotel is functional, comfortable and a great base for exploring.
Hotel Kings Court – Hotel Kings Court is our recommended hotel if you want to splash out. Next to the Art Nouveau Municipal House, the hotel is right in the centre of the city. There is a small pool here, a Finnish sauna and a steam bath. Massages are available on request and there are fitness facilities on site too. The hotel has a Vodka bar in the lobby and a beautiful restaurant that offers picturesque views of Republic Square. The restaurant serves local specialities and international cuisine as well. If you want to treat yourself to a luxury stay in the city, this is a great option for you.
