Discover Innsbruck: A Compact City of Culture

Tucked away at the base of the breathtaking Tyrolean mountains, Innsbruck is a popular stop for walkers in search of a hilly hike. The landscape is made up of green hills that transform into incredible, jagged peaks of rock reaching into the blue sky above. This Austrian city is worth a visit for the views alone, but for the curious and engaged traveller there is lots more on offer in this idyllic place than just a good walk.

For travellers who are interested in varying invigorating days of hiking with some local history and cultural sites, Innsbruck could just be the perfect holiday destination to explore. There is so much packed into this charming city that you could include in a short or longer itinerary, but below is a list of my absolute must-dos for first-time visitors.

The Golden Roof

One of the strangest and most fascinating must-see attractions in this incredibly historic destination is a gilded copper oriel, which dates from around the late fifteenth century. Famously known as the Golden Roof, this intricate architectural feature is located in the heart of the Old Town and boasts 2,657 shingles as well as some beautiful and detailed frescos. With the impressive mountain range as a backdrop, this is definitely a sight that should be added to your list.

Innsbruck,

The Imperial Palace

Austria is well-known for its regal architecture and there’s no better example of Austrian magnificence than the Imperial Palace in Innsbruck. Not only is its size imposing, but the Gothic courtyard, Crest Tower, and intricate interiors are a feast for the eyes. This is a great place to while away a couple of hours, as you step back in time to immerse in the affluence and opulence of Emperor Maximilian I.

Innsbruck

The Folk Art Museum

This unique museum is one of my favourite attractions in the city as it provides a fantastic and very tangible insight into the history and cultural heritage of the wider region. Here you’ll find an incredible collection of objects that tell the story of the people of Innsbruck from the pre-modern world to the present day.

The Old Town

Last but not least, you absolutely must take a leisurely stroll around the city’s Old Town, where you’ll stumble upon the most charming little shops, picturesque streets, and more architectural gems that you can possibly imagine. I would highly recommend taking the time to climb the 148 steps of the City Tower, where you’ll be rewarded with the most spectacular views over the city.

Where to Stay

Apartment Am Hofgarten: These chic apartments provide a stylish base from which to explore all the cultural spots and offer guests incredible mountain views from their own private terrace. A city break really doesn’t get more comfortable than this.

Hotel Innsbruck: This hotel seamlessly blends modern design with classic Alpine features, offering guests a luxurious place to relax and unwind. Located on the banks of the Inn River, guests can enjoy a dip in the golden indoor pool and relax in the spa that overlooks the Old Town.

Hotel Grauer Bär: This absolutely charming hotel is set in a historic building with an incredible onsite restaurant nestled in the vaults. This accommodation offers a memorable stay with all the amenities needed to add a touch of luxury to your stay.

How to Get There

The beloved destination of Innsbruck is just a short flight from the UK, making it the perfect place for a culture-rich getaway. While it can be pretty busy in summer, you’ll find great deals during the winter months, especially in December when flights go for a steal of as low as £40 return. Christmas mini-break anyone? You can fly with many of the well-known airlines including Easyjet and Jet2.

Although getting to the city from the airport is a short journey, I always recommend pre-booking an airport transfer when planning your holiday. This will ensure that you can relax from the moment you step off the plane. A transfer from Innsbruck Airport to Innsbruck centre is quick and easy, and if you pre-book with Shuttle Direct you’ll be able to just sit back and relax.

Whether you’ve used a pre-booked airport transfer service before or are trying it out for the first time, there are always two important aspects to consider before booking. Once you’ve got these settled, it will be much easier to choose your vehicle type.
