Come to Cannes

And why would you not come to Cannes, located on the jaw dropping French Riviera, when the place has so much to offer. They do not host the world’s most famous film festival for nothing, but more of that later.

Indeed, there is so much more than just the aforementioned gathering to see, not least the luxurious hotels, the delectable restaurants and the stunning surroundings.

In fact, coming to Cannes or going somewhere else is not the question. The question is: why have you not been here already? For those that have, coming back is a always a clear objective.

And if all this was not enough, you can visit the plush principality of Monaco, which is just an hour away and makes a pleasant day trip.

Cinema

When you think of Cannes many immediately think of the Film Festival.

Arguably the most famous event of its type in the world, Cannes Film Festival takes place every year in mid-May and stimulates the imagination of not just the rich and famous, but also the man on the street.

Dating back to the middle of the last century, the occasion brings a great deal of attention to the city from far and wide.

Despite not being open to the public, it is still an excellent time to visit. However, the prices, unsurprisingly, reflect this fever.

The celebration attracts an array of film stars and producers, particularly those with a vested interest in promoting an upcoming movie or production.

Indeed, last year’s highlights included Nicole Kidman, who starred in the film Grace of Monaco, which opened the festival, and Tommy Lee Jones, who was one of the big winners with the film The Homesman, in which he starred, produced and directed.

This year’s commemoration is expected to be just as illustrious and will begin on 13 May.

Theatre

Not quite as globally acknowledged as its on screen cousin, theatre also plays a major part in what makes this place so special.

And in the Theatre Alexandre III, Cannes prides itself on having one of the most intimate, yet vibrant arena’s in Europe.

It showcases local heroes, as well as those from further afield, and also hosts workshops and plays from nearby educational institutions.

Theatre productions also play a prominent role throughout the film festival, and can be taken advantage of if you are looking to kill two birds with one stone.

Music

It is not just the stage and screen for which Cannes is well known, as its nightlife is a testimony to.

Furthermore, this vibe is something you can appreciate all year round.

From romantic love songs to live DJ sets, this French city can satisfy almost all musical tastes.

For those looking for something of the more classical variety, the Musical Nights of Le Suquet, which normally happens around mid-late July, sees globally recognised orchestras performing on the steps of the Notre Dame de l’Esperance.

In addition, dance and opera play a major part of the celebrations as Cannes rejoices in the musical talents the world over.

Restaurants and Shopping

When electing somewhere to visit this year, the culinary delights and the possibility of easing your shopaholic tendencies both need to be taken into consideration.

And on each of these two fronts, Cannes delivers.

International cuisine is available but you really must try to make the most of the local dishes that some of the best restaurants on the continent have to offer.

With Michelin restaurants here in abundance, quality is not short on the French Riviera. Needless to say, given its proximity to the Mediterranean, the seafood options are a must

As for shopping, there are high street brands, up market boutiques or trendy markets from which to choose from.

Take in the shopping highlights whilst also appreciating the classical architecture, particularly on the 16th century Rue Grande or Rue Meynadier.

Where to stay

Affordable

The O Carré Croisette is certainly a decent option, particularly as it comes in at less than €100 per night, when choosing somewhere to stay in Cannes (prices may vary depending on the time of year, and notice given).

Its fours stars illustrate that it is cheerful as well as cheap, and it is one of the town’s most recommended accommodations, with a rating of over 90% on some websites.

It has studios and apartments lying just a few minutes away from the beach.

In addition, each room has wifi and will be decorated to the theme of the beach, the sea or the sun, giving you an extra feel for what lies ahead.

Mid Range

For something slightly more up market try the Hotel Gray d’Albion Barriere Cannes.

There are a multitude of reasons this is the ideal accommodation for those shopping in the mid range area, in terms of price.

Firstly, this four star place is located centrally, not far from the seafront and equally close to the shopping district. The train station is just one kilometre away and the famous Le Croisette Casino is just a few minutes walk.

The hotel does offer a private beach, albeit for a slight surcharge.

As for what it is on offer, well how about free wifi, city views, satellite television and a fantastic décor?

And it does not all end there, the air conditioning, bathrobes and private bathrooms all come as standard so just sit back, relax and enjoy the stay.

Luxury

If you are seeking one of the best hotels Cannes has to offer, then you need the five star Grand Hotel.

With both the La Malmaison Art Centre and Le Princes Casino just minutes from here on foot, the Grand Hotel ticks all the boxes in terms of location and style.

And there is plenty more, with a private beach and lookouts to the sea, as well as amazing views of the city. This top class accommodation offers balconies and terraces throughout that will take your breath away.

And how about dining at the hotel’s Michelin starred restaurant whilst looking over the garden or out to sea.

Yes. In every way this place will not disappoint.

Getting to and from Cannes

Nice Airport, or to give it its full title ‘Nice Côte d’Azur Airport’, is the best place to fly to for those wishing to make Cannes their once of a lifetime trip.

It is located on France’s south coast but has no obvious public transport feeding Cannes.

Therefore, it is highly recommend to use the luxurious yet affordable services of Shuttle Direct who can whisk you away from the airport quicker than you can say ‘Bon Voyage’ and you will be in the heart of Cannes in no time.

Furthermore, you will be able to take in the views as you pass along France’s notorious southern coastline.

If it is efficiency and luxury, but not pricey, you are after then Shuttle Direct can deliver exactly what you need.
