Clear Skies Ahead: Flying with Children Made Easy

For many parents, flying with children is often a nuisance at best and a nightmare they come to dread at the very worst. However, with a little help, travelling with tykes can become more than bearable – especially with this infographic from Sainsbury’s Bank. Use these top tips for clear skies and smooth sailing next time your take your little one on an airplane.

When the Going Gets Tough…

…The tough are prepared! Here’s what to do in case of travel-related issues.

  • Motion sickness – Diluting salts, wristbands and tablets are all recognised treatments. Remember that children between three and twelve are especially susceptible to this ailment.
  • Ear pain/pressure – Feed your baby or have your child suck on hard sweets during take-off and landing. Older children can be taught to ‘pop’ their ears by holding their nose and gently blowing.
  • Nerves – Confidentially and calmly walk them through what will happen at the airport so that they will be prepared for take-off, landing, finding their seat and going through security. A reassured child is a relaxed child.

In-Flight Activities

Keep your child entertained and distracted until you reach your destination with:

  • music and audio books
  • the materials to make a travel journal
  • readers and tablets for downloaded or offline media, apps and games

What Not to Forget

Make sure you have the following invaluable items in your hand luggage:

  • Blankets
  • Spare clothes
  • Formula, expressed milk or baby food
  • At least one nappy per hour of travelling (and extras just in case)
  • Nappy sacks wet wipes and a disposable changing mat

Travelling with children doesn’t have to be something you fear. Whether you’re flying for an hour or internationally, all you need to feel A-OK about getting your little one airborne are the right tools under your belt. After all, there’s nothing more beautiful or worthwhile than watching your kids experience the world for the first time.
