I love skiing holidays because they give you a chance to get some fresh air and enjoy the finer things in life in stunning wintery landscapes. It is true that many of the resorts are crowded and not the most sophisticated, but there are a few gems that make for fantastic getaways, offering plenty to those who are looking for some peace and quiet.
Megève in the Mont Blanc massif is the pick of the bunch, as it’s quiet, charming and beautiful, boasting fine dining opportunities and a number of classy bars. In my opinion, you really cannot beat sipping on a Martini in a swanky cocktail bar, surrounded by snow after a long day on the slopes.

Here are a few of the best spots to wet your whistle – and maybe even enjoy some food – in a sophisticated atmosphere.
Jazz Club des 5 Rues: This cool jazz club boasts the best live music in Megève and is one of the oldest outside of Paris, having opened shortly after WWII. Small and intimate, you are sure to have an unforgettable evening here, which is further enhanced by the great drinks selection.
Restaurant Chalet Forestier de Rochebrune: This charming restaurant is found in a former farmhouse at the summit of Rochebrune ski area, and is a wonderful spot for a traditional meal and a few drinks. If possible, sit out on the terrace with your meal so that you can take in the sublime views of the area and the crisp mountain air.
M Le Vin: Wine lovers will adore M Le Vin, as it features a mightily impressive wine list and there are experts on hand to help you pick out the perfect bottle. It is not just the cellar that makes this such a great establishment, however, as the welcoming lounge also features fantastic decor and a friendly atmosphere.
Bar le Chalet Zannier: This is a great bar for relaxing after a long day, as it contains plush sofas, a wide selection of books, ambient music and a huge roaring fireplace so that you can get cosy. It is also a great spot for unusual cocktails – ask the bartender for their favourites if you are feeling adventurous!
Le Georges: If you are looking to get cosy and warm with a good whisky on the rocks, Le Georges is the place for you. This English-style tea room is attached to the Mont Blanc Hotel (see below), and its menu features over 30 whiskies!
Comme Chez Soi: Comme Chez Soi is a striking establishment with a chic exterior, contrasting wooden interior, funky seats and an enormous bear sculpture inside. The atmosphere is quirky yet appealing, giving off a swanky afternoon tea/wine bar vibe. There is a huge selection of wines and snacks to choose from and the staff is friendly.
How to Get There
To reach Megève, you will first want to fly from London into Geneva (GVA) Airport. This takes around 90 minutes and the flight is made regularly by a number of major carriers. Megève is then just over an hour away by road, so you will not want to wait around or get on a crowded bus. Instead, pre-book a private Shuttle Direct transfer, and a helpful driver will be waiting for you at the airport and take you straight to your hotel.
Where to Stay
Chalet du Mont d’Arbois: A fabulous five-star hotel found right in the heart of Mont Blanc, this property features three comfortable chalets, a spa centre, outdoor and indoor swimming pool and a fitness room. You do not have to stray far for an unforgettable meal, as Chalet du Mont d’Arbois has its own two-star Michelin restaurant and there are a further four eateries nearby. Previous guests here have spoken very highly of the location and excellent service.
Hotel Mont Blanc: Situated in the centre of Megève is this classy hotel, which is right next to the cable cars. It has its own spa with an indoor pool, which is heavenly after a day on the slopes, whilst the cosy rooms and friendly staff help you to feel at home immediately. In addition to Le Georges, the hotel also has a traditional restaurant onsite. Its central location makes it a great choice for those who like to get out and explore each day.
Alpaga: Alpaga offers hotel rooms, self-catered apartments and chalets, all of which have stunning views of the mountains that you can enjoy from your room. The chalets feature a fireplace, private garden and fully-equipped kitchen, allowing you to feel at home and enjoy some privacy. Alpaga also provides its guests with a Michelin-starred restaurant and a lounge restaurant, where you can enjoy food out on the sun terrace. Guests can also enjoy a number of activities, including rafting, fishing and hiking.
