With its picturesque lakeside location and reputation for glamorous residents (George Clooney famously has a villa there), Como is a popular spot for holidaymakers to base their camp. Below we’ve shared some of our favourite things to do in and around the city.
Como-Brunate Railway
The Como-Brunate railway graces many a “highlights of Como” list, and for good reason: running in a dead straight line, eastward and uphill, the railway represents an easy way to get from Como to the village of Brunate. The journey boasts marvellous views of the local countryside, vegetation and the famous lake, while bringing its own reward at the top: Brunate is a charming village well worth a little bit of exploration on foot. After investigating the beautiful houses and the Santa Andrea church, you can follow the path up to a lighthouse, built in honour of Alessandro Volta, which commands spectacular views of the surrounding land.
On/Over/Around the Lake
Many people take boating tours of the famous Lake Como. As well as offering a relaxing day on the water, boating provides unique views of the mountains and villas around the lake, as well as the lake itself.
If flying is more your speed, there’s also the opportunity to take seaplane tours of Como from above. As well as the experience of taking off from and landing on the water, these tours offer views for miles around, as well as a bird’s-eye view of the glittering waters. If you’re in Como for long enough, there’s also the opportunity to take a few lessons yourself!

Should you prefer to remain on terra firma, the recently redeveloped lakeside path is a lovely way to enjoy the town at your own pace. Amble alongside the gently rippling waters, watching the boats and the planes taking off, and perhaps even visit the historically valuable villas that grace the promenade, including the famous neoclassical Villa Olmo.
People-Watching
Duck into one of the side-streets, away from the beaten path, and find somewhere quiet and with a nice view. A little bar or café, perhaps, with seats in a shady spot outside. Order a drink and a snack and sit there for as long as you please, watching people, both locals and tourists, going about their business and enjoying the sun. Sometimes the best way to see the sights is to not see them at all, instead paying close attention to the people right in front of you.
How to get to Como:
If you’re coming by train, the nearest stations are Milan Central and Garibaldi. Take the Trenitalia direct to Como San Giovanni station, which is itself well-connected by bus to other local destinations (including the lake).
With regards to air travel, Como is primarily served by Malpensa Airport, Milan. After landing, it’s an easy journey via train (change at Saronno station) to Como Lago station. Buses are available from this station if you’re staying in one of the other lakeside villages. Alternatively, if you’re renting a car, take the A8 motorway from Milan to Como. For those landing at Bergamo Airport, there is a thrice-daily direct bus to Como. We also offer Como airport transfers for the sake of convenience.

Where to stay:
Trattoria Albergo La Vignetta – A short drive away from Como, Trattoria Albergo La Vignetta offers superb value for money and functional rooms. Despite the low prices, the hotel is not without its luxuries, including a view from every room and wine tastings in its very own cellar!
