Rock of Ilfach
Ok, so this one isn’t strictly historical but it’s a significant landmark that’s hard to miss! Ilfach is an imposing crag that dominates Calpe by towering above the sea at 332 metres high. It’s also part of a nature reserve and makes for a great excursion for those who like to keep active and can handle a challenge – believe me, this hike is challenging. You’ll climb up the sheer rock face and through a short tunnel. While this isn’t a walk for people afraid of heights, there is no place better to watch the sunset over the blue sea, historical buildings and fishing port.
The Old Town
You must spend a few hours exploring the Old Town of Calpe, which is where you’ll find the heart of this interesting location. While it can be busy with tourists, those travelling out of peak season will get to experience a more authentic side of the Spanish lifestyle. Expect narrow, stone streets, low traditional homes flashing their brightly painted facades and plenty of tree-lined squares in which to find respite from the Mediterranean sun. Iglesia Vieja
This is a very exciting attraction for those with a particular penchant for architecture. The Old Church known as Iglesia Vieja is the only surviving example of Mudejar-Gothic architecture in the whole of Valencia. Plan to visit just before or after lunch for a cool, quiet moment before exploring more.
Banos de la Reina (Queen’s Baths)
Another one for the history buffs! As you can probably guess, this is an ancient Roman site dating from the 2nd and 4th centuries. Historians have identified the ruins as an old fish farm and thermal baths. You’ll find this site next to the Paseo Maritimo Playa del Bol promenade.
The Moorish castle
Jump next to another key moment in history with a trip to the Moorish Castle that overlooks the Mascarat ravine. It’s mostly ruins now, but is definitely worth a wander around to get a sense of the vastness of Calpe’s historical importance.
Torreón de la Peça
As I mentioned previously, Calpe’s coastal location meant it needed good protection from invaders. Evidence of this is found in this landmark, which is the remains of a defence tower dating from the 15th century. You can also visit the Museo del Coleccionismo nearby which holds lots of interesting artefacts such as ceramic objects and vintage toys.
Molí del Morelló
Right next to the Queen’s Baths sits this ancient Tower Mill, again reminding visitors of the long history of this pretty coastal town.
