The Striking Church of Notre Dame et St Nicolas

As you enter the beautiful alpine town of Briançon, you can hardly fail to notice the eye-catching, dome-topped towers of the Church of Notre Dame et St. Nicholas. This 18th-century structure is the centrepiece of the Briançon Old Town, an imposing edifice that appears to rise right out of the valley. As you approach the church, you’ll notice the beautiful yellow-orange facade, and the painted sundial on the left-hand tower. Inside, the nave is lined with marble columns which support a magnificent vaulted ceiling. I love the peace and solitude of alpine churches, and I always make a little extra

Freeriding in Canazei

The resort town of Canazei in the Dolomite Mountains is the kind of place that caters to those with a taste for adventure. A hotspot for snowboard, rock climbing, and mountaineering, Canazei is also an excellent place to try the newest trend in skiing: freeriding. In freeride skiing, there are no pistes, no snow cannons, and no set course – just fresh powder and natural, ungroomed slopes. The sport emphasises fast, agressive technique and requires a thorough knowledge of the mountain geography. Canazei, located in the Val di Fassa, has plenty of options for freeride runs and off-piste itineraries. If

The Church of Santa Coloma

Andorra is a small country, but it is packed with wonders. One of my favourites is the Romanesque church in the town Santa Coloma, which has been standing since at least the 9th century, making it the oldest church in the country! Its most distinctive feature is its circular bell tower, which was added in the 12th century. The structure looks absolutely stunning against the backdrop of the Pyrenees mountains, especially when the clouds are hanging low over the peaks. If you find yourself in the Pyrenees, the Church of Santa Coloma is definitely worth a visit. And it’s free!

Mayrhofen’s Historic Heritage Train

Nestled in the Zillertal Valley, Mayrhofen is the very portrait of classic alpine life. Whether summer or winter, visitors flock to this region for the beautiful scenery and fresh mountain air. For a full tour of this beautiful area, catch a ride on the Zillertal Heritage Railway, which begins at Mayrhofen. In operation since 1902, the Zillertal Heritage Railway was an important transport link for area residents. Nowadays, however, the railways is more popular as a tourist attraction. Easily recognisable by its cheery red colour and plume of steam, the Zillertal Heritage Railway is the perfect way to explore the

Holiday Magic in Innsbruck

Innsbruck in a beautiful place to visit at any time of year, but winter is when this Austrian town really comes to life. A top destination for winter sports fanatics, Innsbruck is also renowned for its Christmas markets. I recommend the market in the Old Town, which takes place in the square right in front of Innsbruck’s most famous landmark, the Golden Roof. Beneath a towering Christmas tree bedecked with twinkling light, you can browse some 70 market stalls selling handicrafts and ornaments. Keep warm with a mug of mulled wine, or nibble on kiachln, fried yeasted doughnuts popular at

Environmental Harmony in Flaine

Flaine is a ski resort with a designer touch. When the site was discovered in the French Alps in 1959, the design of the resort was entrusted to renowned Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer. Breuer’s design integrated the resort’s buildings into the environment, so that the layout blends into the environment’s natural contours. The resort is built on several levels, which gives it a spacious, secluded feel. Experience Flaine’s environmental harmony for yourself this winter with a low-cost airport transfer from Geneva Airport. Starting at just £35.10, you can catch a shuttle bus directly to this Alpine gem. http://www.shuttledirect.com/en/airport/GVA/

The Music of Cortina d’Ampezzo

The Italian alpine town of Cortina d’Ampezzo is one of the most famous ski resorts in the entire world. A top location for jet-setters and European aristocrats, this mountain town has also been the film set for the Pink Panther and one of the James Bond series. But what I like best about Cortina d’Ampezzo is the music. Music is very important to the local population, with young musicians often found performing in the streets. Every year Cortina d’Ampezzo hosts the Dino Ciani Festival and Academy, which draws young pianists from all over the world. In summer especially, this alpine
